Taking Care Of Your Dog When You Go On Holiday

It’s a great thing to have a dog. Not only are they incredible company and very loving, but they are also just a great being to have around you all the time. Of course, just because it is lovely to have a dog doesn’t mean that it is easy all the time, and there are some respects in which it can cause you a little trouble in your daily life. One example of where this can be the case is when you go on holiday, and have to leave your little friend behind. Having a dog means, for most people, not going on as many trips as before. But if you still want to make sure that you are going to be able to have a holiday, then you will need to find something to do with your dog to make sure they are being looked after, as their wellbeing is paramount. Let’s take a look at some of the best options you have here.

Leave Them With A Friend

If you have a particularly good friend who you know would be happy to look after them, then that is generally the best option and the one you should probably go for. But make sure that you are genuinely not putting anyone out – the last thing you want is for your friend to really not be happy about having to do it, so make sure that they are okay with it. It helps if they happen to be a true dog lover, of course, and that should help to inform your decision about which friends to ask in the first place. Leaving them with a friend means that you can relax and enjoy your holiday, knowing full well that they are being looked after perfectly well.

Go To The Professionals

Of course, you might instead decide that you want to go to a professional to look after your dog while you are away. This certainly has its distinct benefits. For one, you can make sure that you are actually going to get updated, as many professional dog walkers and sitters keep you regularly updated as a matter of course, which a friend might not do so readily. You can also expect that they will be fed and walked the proper amount, as a professional is going to know exactly how much they need both. Clearly, this is a good way to go which results in you knowing that your dog is looked after, and which is certainly worth the money.

Ask A Neighbour

Finally, if you happen to have a particularly trustworthy neighbor, then that could be a possible way to have your dog looked after. You might even ask them to simply house sit for you, which can be nice for the pooch as it means they don’t have to go and get used to another home. But do make sure that you choose a neighbor that you definitely feel you can trust, otherwise you might end up regretting it!

Messy Mutt: Keeping Life Clean When You Adopt A Dog

There are many dog lovers in the world who are stuck with a conundrum. When you don’t have an animal like this and have worked extremely hard to build your home into something which reflects your personality, the idea of inviting their chaos can seem like a crazy one. Before you even start to think about the waste they leave behind, creatures like this aren’t exactly careful. Of course, though, this doesn’t have to stop you from having a pet like this; it just means you need to make some changes to your lifestyle to suit one. To help you out with this, this post will be exploring some of the best methods to live with a dog without letting your home fall into ruin.

Clear Pathways

Unlike humans, dogs don’t understand the value or fragility of certain items around the home. Plates, vases, and other brittle objects are found everywhere in your home, and they are very easy to knock from their resting places when a large animal is barreling through the place. This won’t be such a problem if you’re going to have a small dog, as they won’t have the same damage potential as something larger, but it will always be worth considering.

Solving this is a simple matter of clearing the way. Low furniture like coffee tables, sideboards, and drawers should have their surfaces kept free from items which could be broken by your dog. Of course, your dog shouldn’t be running around indoors. If they seem to be very restless when they are indoors, it could be worth giving them a little more exercise, a few things are more destructive than a puppy with too much juice. As they get older, it should get easier to avoid having things break around your dog.

Tidying Up

Going back to their inability to understand the importance of some objects, most dogs will also struggle to know what does and doesn’t belong to them. This means that items which are left around your home could be easy pickings for your pet, and some have the potential to cause a real mess. For example, if your dog gets its teeth around a loo roll, you could come home to a place which is covered in tiny fragments of paper. This will take a long time to clean but is also completely avoidable if you keep your dog under control.

Along with tidying your home, it will also be important to think about tidying your dog. When they’ve had the chance to spend an afternoon outdoors, they will probably come home with a good deal of dirt in their fur. In some cases, if they have access to water, they could even be muddy, and this is very hard to clean from the inside of your home. A hose, towel, and bottle of dog shampoo can be enough to solve this issue, giving you the ability to clean your dog on the doorstep, rather than having to take them inside.

Training Them

Unlike a cat, your dog will be a natural team player. With their early ancestors being pack animals, modern dogs still hold a lot of their social skills, and this is part of what makes them such great companions for humans. Along with this, though, it also provides you with the opportunity to give them some training. For the best results with something like this, it’s always worth starting as early as possible, as time will be a valuable resource when it comes to getting things right. Below, you can find some examples of the areas your dog will need to be trained in.

Toilet Manners: One of the biggest fears which new dog owners have is that their furry friend will leave waste around their home. While this is a risk with any animal, dogs are one of the easiest species to train out of this sort of behaviour. As a puppy, they may need female or male dog wraps to ensure that they don’t make any accidental messes. If they do leave something behind which they shouldn’t have, punishing them is a bad idea, with a stern word or two often being enough to let them know that they can do better.

A lot of people will use their garden for this process, simply moving their furry friend outside when it looks like they need to go to the toilet. You can help this process along by placing some of their waste outside, while also keeping it clean to ensure that they always have somewhere to go. As time goes on, accidents will become rarer and rarer, until it is only you who can cause something like this to happen.

Obedience: There are few things harder to manage than a disobedient dog. Trying to keep them safe, out of fights, and in the good books of those around you will be hard when they are very young, as most puppies will simply act how they please. With stern words and rewards for good behaviour, though, you can often take control of this area. Fear and pain should never be tools in this sort of effort, with most dogs growing to hate their owners when they are subjected to physical punishments for minor transgressions. Remember; they won’t understand why something isn’t allowed.

Emotions: Much like the people who own them, dogs are always very emotional animals. Wagging tails, forward facing ears, and growling are all signs of strong emotions, but some puppies will struggle to control the way they feel. Thankfully, soothing an animal like this is much the same as making a baby feel better, with remaining calm and supportive being the best approach to take. Getting angry with an excited dog isn’t fair, as they will usually only be trying to communicate with you.

Training your pet isn’t always the easiest job, with most people never having gone through this process before. Of course, while it might be hard, it is well worth it to ensure that your home doesn’t get impacted by the animal you’ve decided to look after. If you need extra help with this, there are loads of companies out there which offer specialist dog training. It might cost a little bit of money, but going through a process like this will always result in a more obedient dog, and this can be well worth the money.

Cleaning Things Up

Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try, there will always be a certain amount of mess which comes with your puppy. Like any animal, these creatures aren’t able to control a lot of the things they leave behind, and this means that you have to be active in your approach to cleaning them up. Below, you can find some examples of the common areas in the home which will need the most attention, giving you the chance to start thinking about it before you take the plunge with your puppy.

Furry Furniture: Most dogs will have a summer and a winter coat. When the warmer months roll around, they won’t need their thicker fur anymore and will shed it all off over the course of a few weeks. This often results in furniture being covered with the stuff. To overcome this sort of mess, you will need to do two different jobs; brushing the dog, and rolling the furniture. Both brushes and lint rollers can be found all over the web, and won’t cost much to get your hands on.

Dirty Floors: Whether it’s footprints or food, your dog will leave a lot of waste behind when they move around your home. Vacuuming the areas which they spend the most time in each day can be a great way to keep this under control, though some people prefer to take a more modern approach. Devices like the Roomba are able to clean the floor space on a whole level of a building without the help of a human. They might scare the dog at first, but will be worth it to keep the mess under control.

The Garden: In most cases, dogs will spend most of their toilet time in the garden. This saves you from having to collect waste while out and about, while also making it easier for them to avoid having accidents. Of course, though, you can’t have poo piling up in your garden for months on end and need to work on this part of your home very regularly to keep it clean. There are few things worse than treading something like this into a carpet, making it worth keeping the garden clear.

With all of this in mind, you should be ready to start living a clean life with your puppy. A lot of homeowners fear the idea of an animal like this, worrying that their hard work will be destroyed when they welcome their furry friend. In reality, though, as long as you’re willing to work at it, it’s far from impossible to have a nice place and a puppy at the same time.

3 Things Your Dog Would Want You To Know

Have you ever wished your dog could talk?

Those times when he barks constantly, and you have no idea why. The times when he looks at you with pleading eyes, but you really don’t know what it is he is after. If he had the capacity to speak, he would be able to communicate to you his feelings and desires. But unfortunately, he doesn’t have those words to offer you.

But if your dog could talk, these are just some of the things we imagine he would probably want you to know.

1: “I don’t misbehave to annoy you.”

How many times have you rebuked your dog for misbehaving? How many times have you taken it personally? As dog owners, we often ask ourselves why our dogs can misbehave so badly, despite our best efforts to care for them. Shouldn’t they be more grateful? And shouldn’t they show gratitude through good behavior?

Here’s the thing. Quite often, dogs misbehave for a number of reasons, none of them out of malice or revenge for you. When dogs are left alone for a long time, they can become anxious and have toileting accidents. When dogs are bored, they can start to entertain themselves by chewing on such things as your slippers. As the dog owner, you can alleviate such instances. You might ask a neighbor to pop in to keep your dog company, for example. And you might spend more time playing with your dog, instead of neglecting them while you watch the television. There are all kinds of causes and solutions to doggy misbehavior, some of which you can deal with yourself, and some of which might require the assistance of a training specialist if things get out of hand. So, don’t take your dog’s misbehavior personally, even if he does always target your slippers.

  1. “I am head over paws in love with you.”

Have you ever woken up in the morning, only to be greeted with a slurping kiss and bad breath? Have you ever come home from work, only to be welcomed by your dog with an excited bark and an outstretched paw? Our tendency is to push our dogs away with irritation and annoyance, but the truth is this: your dog does it because he loves you!

Dogs crave human interaction. When they greet you unceremoniously, or when they look up at you with puppy-dog eyes, its because they want to be with you. Your dog is your best friend, whether you like it or not. Therefore, return that friendship. Give them the attention they crave with a kiss and a cuddle. Play fetch with them in the park. Take them on long walks. Your dog’s love for you is unconditional, despite those moments when you have lost patience because of another chewed-up slipper. So, the least you can do is return the favor and show your dog some love in return.

  1. “I will eat anything.”

Chances are, when your dog is barking or looking up at you with pleading eyes, he probably wants to feed again. Dogs love food, and other than your company, having something to eat is something guaranteed to get them out of bed in the morning. And even after you have fed your dog, he will probably be on the hunt for more food. That leftover sausage on your plate? Your dog will deal with that faster than you can say “I was saving that for later.”

Dogs will eat anything, from the food you put out for them, to anything else that takes their fancy – even their own poop! As a dog owner, you need to be alert to this. You need to be mindful of the food you give them, only giving them the correct portions for their breed and size. You need to avoid giving them human food, some of which could be deadly. And you need to care for your dog’s dental needs, such as brushing their teeth to remove any food that could cause gum disease and giving them breathe spray to neutralize growing bacteria and stinking dog breath. Your dog won’t have the know-how to eat a healthy diet, and they don’t have the skills to care for their digestion and teeth properly, so you need to be there for them. Manage their diet, take them to the vet for a dental checkup, and go easy on the treats!

Final word

If your dog could talk, we are sure they would communicate the above to you. But as they don’t talk, you can still get an idea of what is they want by their actions. That chewed slipper will let you know they are bored. That sloppy kiss will let you know your dog loves you. And chances are, those frustrated barks and begging paws are probably signs that yes, your dog wants to feed again! Perhaps it is easier to know what your dogs want than you thought!

How to Keep Your Home Clean With Dogs

It can seem like a never-ending battle when you have dogs and you like to keep a clean house. Endless amounts of hair can be found under the sofas and in the rugs. Dirty paw prints are traipsed all through the floors and that wet dog smell just won’t go away. You love them like your children but you wish there was a way of keeping everything clean while letting them enjoy themselves. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Groom Your Dog

All dogs moult. It varies how much dogs of different breeds moult but even if you have a short haired dog, you’ll still find hair everywhere. To stop your dogs from shedding all over your furniture, it’s important to brush them at least 3 times a week; more if your dog has long hair. The more hair on your dog, the more can fall off, so make sure your dog’s hair is cut by a professional groomer on a regular basis. It’s not just to save your furniture. Your dog will need to be cut to stay cool during the warmer months.

Install an Outside Tap

Most of our dogs go to the toilet in our gardens at least three times a day. During the Summer months, if the garden isn’t cleaned properly, the smell can intensify. The last thing you want is a waft of something nasty every time you open the back door. Consider installing an outside tap by contacting your local plumbers. The job takes less than an hour usually, and it doesn’t cost much. You can then attach a hose pipe to the tap and you’ve got a way of quickly getting rid of the smell. You can also pick up pet friendly disinfectants at local pet stores.

Pet Vacuum

When you need to replace your vacuum, it’s worth investing in a vacuum designed for cleaning pet mess. Not only will it be easier to remove hair from furniture and carpets, the sharp suction also allows you to clean up dirty paw prints when your dog has been on a wet or muddy walk. Of course, it’s important to clean your dog’s paws before they enter the main house, but you can never guarantee you’ll get every piece of dirt off them.

Go for Walks

Exercising your dog is more important than you may think when it comes to keeping your house clean. This is especially important for younger dogs because it ensures their energy is lowered and they’ll have less interest in being destructive. So, if you a cushion you’re particularly fond of, make sure your dog is stimulated both physically and mentally. When a dog is tired, it’s more likely to obey your commands than get into mischief. So, if you tell your dog to wait at the door while you get a towel to dry it’s fur off, it will be more inclined to please you and obey.

It may be hard keeping up with mucky pups but the loyalty and companionship you receive in return makes it all worth it.

Hasbro’s Joy for All Companion Pets Dog Cat #Hasbro #Joyforall

This post was sponsored by Hasbro’s Joy For All brand as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central. All opinions expressed in my post are my own.

Growing up close to my grandparents was amazing. I was so fortunate to have had them right down the road. Now that I am grown, I feel like I appreciate them more. We lost our grandmother a few years ago and if it wasn’t for Bella, my grandfather’s black lab mix, my grandfather probably wouldn’t have dealt with her loss as good as he did. They were married for a long time.

Recently we lost Bella to old age, this has been really hard on my grandfather. When I stop by to visit, some days he will ask me to let Bella out. Some days he will talk about missing her so much. We are moving him soon to a retirement villa where we can keep a better eye out on him so getting another dog is just not an option.

I was so relieved and excited to have found the Hasbro’s Joy for All Puppy. I took it to my grandfather and he was so happy he cried. It made me feel good knowing that he has a purpose again. Therefore he will continue to live a happier life. The puppy is so much like a real dog that he kept saying I hope they let me keep him at my new home. I wasn’t sure if he realized it wasn’t a real dog. He talked to it and was holding it and petting it. I love the fact I don’t have to worry about him forgetting to take the dog potty or feeding him.

I love knowing this dog will be around a long time because Hasbro has a long tradition of creating the world’s best play experiences, and the Joy For All brand represents an extension of that tradition, striving to bring happiness and fun to aging loved ones and their families. They are amazing at not only make toys that last but making items that even my grandfather can play with.

I taught him how to mute the dog for night time, and how to turn him on and off. This is a perfect companion for those aging love ones that don’t really need the responsibility of a pet, but long for one. He started calling him Buddy, saying he is my bud now. Of course, he calls me my sister’s names but he can remember his new companions name.

You can talk to the dog and it will respond so you feel as though it is real, especially with its soft fur! The batteries are already included and can be used right out of the box. Of course, we have always been a dog family but they have the cutest Cat Companion also just in case your loved one prefers a cat!

Texas Pete Hot Sauce Perfect for Chili Dogs!! #tailgate

Chili Dog Mix – Texas Pete Hot Sauce

I am in charge of the chili for our tailgating party so each year I work on a new twist to my recipe to make that perfect chili for our hot dogs. I love trying different products to make the perfect chili, and since I do not like heart burn, I have found that making it from scratch is my best method and the one that gets the most raves. Of course my secret is the Texas Pete Hot Sauce. Without it my recipe is bland but the minute I add it everyone comments on how awesome it is.

Here is my secret recipe to making the best tailgating chili ever…

2 pounds of hamburger meat sauteed with onion a little garlic salt, salt and pepper. (Cook until fully cooked then drain grease).

1 Can Tomato paste, about 4 to 5 tomatoes, I love using fresh chopped up.

Chili powder to taste, more salt and pepper.

I used dried kidney beans, soak for one hour, boil for one hour drain and then add to sauce. (they need to cook about 90 minutes to be fully cooked).

Add about 10 drops of Texas Pete’s Hot Sauce.

Stir and let cook on low for about two hours. I usually add about 5 – 10 more drops of Texas Pete before serving. This gives it the best flavor.

We use Texas Pete’s Hot Sauce on just about everything from grilled oysters to Bloody Mary’s. This flavor is good with everything! If you are looking for something not too hot with a good flavor that everyone will enjoy then you need to try it!

Texas Pete

We also like to use it on wings, soak the wings in the Texas Pete overnight and then grill them with a little salt and they are a hit especially at our tailgates.

How To Rent With Pets

Finding a new home to rent is stressful enough, but for pet owners, it can be even more of a challenge. Many landlords don’t allow pets, so finding somewhere for you and your fur babies to live is often difficult.

Image from Pixabay

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask

Many landlords have a different idea of what ‘pet’ means so even if a listing says no pets, it can be worth asking the question anyway. Many landlords mean no cats or dogs, but would have no issue with a pet like a gerbil or a budgie. If you are a cat or dog owner, ask anyway and offer to provide a reference from your current landlord or to pay a larger deposit in case of damage caused by the pet. You may be surprised by how many landlords are willing to compromise.

Look around for pet friendly rentals. Using resources like this local report from ABODO to find pricing for pet-friendly rentals can be a huge help. Be prepared to provide information about your pet’s health and behavior. Knowing you have a well-trained small Yorkshire Terrier with up to date vaccinations, for example, may put your letting agent at ease when they’re picturing a huge, unruly Great Dane.

Image from Pixabay

Take Precautions

If you’ve found a pet friendly rental, make sure you set up any needed precautions to minimise possible pet damage. You may need this landlord in the future for a pet reference so make sure you take the care required. This might be covering up carpets in an area where the pet will regularly be kept, or adding baby gates to keep pets out of any banned parts of the house.

If the landlord leaves any furniture, move out of pet reach if you’re concerned about scratching so it’s only your belongings that take the hit.

Image from Pixabay

Make Any Repairs

If your pet does cause any damage, deal with it yourself as soon as possible. This could be as simple as repainting a wall before you move out, or as major as offering to cover the costs of things like carpet replacement if there’s been more serious damage. Being honest and immediately explaining how you’re going to fix it is likely to go down much better with your landlord than if you’ve tried to cover it up, or move out without mentioning your furry friend tore up the living room carpet.

Where possible, make sure your pet is properly trained. Teach your cat to use a scratching post, and not the wall. Make sure your dog knows if it isn’t allowed upstairs, and make sure any indoor pet is properly house-trained.

Image from Pixabay

While it’s always going to be more difficult, finding a suitable rental for you and the furry members of the family isn’t impossible. Persevere, keep looking and keep asking questions until you find the right landlord or letting agent. When you find them, treat their property with respect so they keep allowing pet owners to live there, and give you a good reference to help you find your next home.

3 Tips for Keeping Your Pets Healthy

Image via Pixabay

As every pet owner knows very well, the animals we share our lives with become members of the family, and not just creatures that occupy the same space as us.

Our pets offer emotional support, companionship, and fun, and the better we get to know them, the more we realize that they have distinct personalities and quirks, too.

For all those reasons, it’s heartbreaking when a pet gets ill, and we would all like to do our best to prevent such a situation from arising.

Here are a few straightforward tips that you can follow for keeping your pets healthy.

  • Check them regularly for parasites, and treat them as soon as you find any

Parasitic creatures, such as ticks and fleas, can cause our pets to experience significant levels of agitation and discomfort, and they can also pass on diseases which can be potentially fatal if left un-medicated.

The thing is, unless you’re paying pretty close attention, you might not necessarily notice that your pet has picked up some parasites, until the problem has exacerbated, and they’ve been scratching themselves raw, losing fur, or displaying other symptoms.

Get into the habit of checking your pets for parasites on a regular basis, and treat them as soon as you find any such parasites.

Medication such as Frontline Plus for cats can often kill off any parasites that may be affecting your pet, within just a few days, and keep them at bay for a good length of time afterwards. The sooner you catch them, the better.

  • Feed your pets food that is as close as possible to their natural diet

Every animal has such a thing as a “natural diet template” that they are meant to follow. Cats, for example, are obligate carnivores, and must eat meat. Even dogs, who we have selectively bred to the point where they are quite distant from their Wolf cousins, need to eat certain foods, and avoid others.

As a general rule, feeding your pets food that is as close as possible to their natural diet helps to keep them in peak health, and stave off many serious and chronic diseases and conditions.

These days, it’s often quite easy to find “high-quality” pet food – but it’s more expensive than generic pet food.

Even if you’re not able to afford top of the range nutrition for your pet, certainly avoid feeding them human treats like chocolate and table scraps. These aren’t likely to be good for them, no matter how much they beg.

  • Ensure that your pets have plenty of opportunity for regular exercise, and social interaction with other animals of their species

All animals need regular physical movement in order to be healthy, and high-energy pets such as cats and dogs need a lot of it.

Generally speaking, your pets will do what they can to exercise themselves – but you should still take your dog for a walk, and should provide plenty of opportunity for your animals to roam around, play, and exhaust themselves.

Additionally, social interaction with other animals of their own species is very important for the well-being of certain pets – particularly dogs, who are naturally social. A visit to a dog park on a regular basis can be great for your dog’s health, for this reason.

Safe and Realistic Ways To Lose Your Body Weight

Are you looking to lose a few pounds?

Be it for health reasons or simply to feel more confident in your swimsuit this summer; we wish you success with your weight-loss efforts.

However, please note the word ‘safe’ in our title.

We emphasize the word ‘safe,’ because many of us do ourselves more harm than good when trying to shed a few pounds. From using laxatives to restricting calories in our diet, we can suffer dire consequences when such methods become a habit. And then there are those dangerous fad diets that might be heavily promoted to us by our family or friends, but which could ultimately damage our bodies as a consequence. Check out these notable examples.

Care needs to be taken then, as we need to look for ways to lose weight safely. This includes taking measures in being wise about how and what we eat, and cutting out bad habits that could cause us to gain weight rather than lose it. We might also consider weight-loss surgery, being careful to choose the right methods for ourselves.

Here are some suggestions you might find useful.

#1: Follow the advice from a medical professional

When it comes to losing weight safely, you need to speak to your doctor or nutritionist for advice. You don’t want to damage yourself by taking on exercise that your body will struggle to handle, and you don’t want to eat or cut down on particular foods that could later prove detrimental for you. Before embarking on any form of weight-loss program then, seek the relevant advice as a priority.

You might also speak to a medical professional about possible surgical and non-surgical treatments. From gastric bypasses to body contouring, there are a number of options open to you. While these are generally considered safe, you should still seek the relevant advice to find out which is right for you, especially when you are already trying to lose weight in other ways.

#2: Start a realistic diet plan

Don’t start a diet that you know you aren’t going commit to. You might start eating a plate of vegetables a night, for example, but as well as missing out on other food groups, you might only be tempted to return to unhealthier foods if your cravings to eat something else get the better of you. Therefore, choose the foods that you enjoy from the five main healthy food groups; fruit and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy products, and seeds and nuts, as these are the food groups that have high nutritional value. By choosing the foods you like from each group, you will eat a balanced diet, and you won’t suffer any nutritional losses by avoiding a particular type of food.

#3: Cut out unhealthy foods

While focusing on those foods that are good for you, make an effort to reduce or eliminate those foods that are only going to increase your body weight. These include sugary, starchy and fatty foods.  By mixing them into your regular diet, you are only going to sabotage your otherwise decent efforts to shed your pounds. Many people treat themselves to a takeaway, for example, after a successful week of healthy eating, but when it comes to losing weight, you need to push the idea of treat foods away from your mind. Instead, consider the next point.

#4: Try healthier alternatives to your worst foods

If you’re tempted to eat something unhealthy, which many of us are when trying to stick to a healthy diet, you should look for possible alternatives. As examples, you might substitute low-fat yogurt in place of ice cream. You might eat dark chocolate instead of the milky variety. Rather than drinking soda or sugary milkshakes, you might try low-calorie fruit juices or fruit smoothies instead. And rather than call the takeaway for a pizza, you might make your own, using toppings that aren’t going to sabotage your weight plan. There are some suggestions here that might prove useful to you, but do your research, looking for the substitutes to the foods that regularly tempt you.

#5: Manage your portions

Losing weight is about eating a balanced diet, but balance isn’t only about the food groups you eat from, but also about controlling your portion sizes. Even healthier foods contain calories, so you don’t want to overdo them. The amount you eat should depend on your age, weight, and the level of activity you embark on each day, so as we suggested right at the beginning, speak to your doctor or nutritionist for advice on what is right for you. You might find this portion guide helpful when planning your weekly meals.

#6: Increase your activity

No matter how many healthy foods you eat, you aren’t going to lose weight sitting on the sofa all day, even if you have substituted a bag of nuts in favor of a bag of popcorn. You need to get active, as this, along with the lower calorie diet you have consumed, will help you to lose weight faster. You don’t necessarily have to go to the gym if you don’t enjoy that type of fitness, and you don’t have to join a soccer team if you have a hatred for all things sports. Remember that we used the word ‘realistic’ in our title, so do the things that you might enjoy. This might be playing games with your kids outdoors, walking your dog, or going for a swim. However, there needs to be some effort on your part. Walking the dog for ten minutes a night won’t suffice, and neither will a quick game of tag with your kids. There is a recommended guide here, and while it doesn’t cover every activity you might prefer, you can still apply it to the exercise types you get involved in.

Losing weight isn’t always a quick process, but it is achievable. However, for greater success, you do need to consider safe and realistic methods to lose weight. Follow our suggestions then, and then continue your research online to improve your chances of losing your pounds in a safe and healthy way.

Take care, and thanks for reading.

If you are truly passionate about rooting for your favorites, you may have attended games in person or purchased some apparel to put your enthusiasm on display. If you want to go the extra mile to express your passion for sports, the following options might appeal to you.

Dress Up the Whole Family

If you have family members who share your passion for sports, grab some gear for everyone. Does your household cheer for the Yankees? Even if you have a brand new arrival, he or she can join you in your fandom if you pick up some cute Yankees baby clothes. Does Fido join everyone in the living room for Steelers games? Try a Steelers dog collar. Having everyone decked out in merchandise can be a fun way to enjoy sports together.

Financial Assistance

Running a sports organization costs money. Funding athletes’ salaries or scholarships, maintaining fields and stadiums and purchasing team equipment can get pricey. You may have already purchased season tickets or bought team merchandise for the whole family, but to ensure the team you back can continue to compete, consider donations. Professional teams in major sports may not need to depend on fan donations to operate, but smaller organizations, like college or high school teams, might really appreciate the extra help.

Throw a Party

One of the most exciting ways to experience a sporting event is in the company of friends and family. Many people choose to entertain during some of the more critical games of the season, such as the opening game of the season or perhaps the Super Bowl. But any game can be a great reason to have a party.

Perhaps you are no able to accommodate all the guests in your home. Try tailgating! A tailgate party typically takes place before a sporting event in the parking lot of the venue. Participants may grill food or consume alcoholic beverages, and it is all done out of the back of someone’s vehicle. This kind of party often gets people really hyped up for the event.

Cheering for a favorite team is something many people of all ages are passionate about. Sports teams can inspire fierce loyalty and intense rivalries. If your team spirit is about more than sitting on the couch and yelling at the television, consider taking your team support to the next level.

Building a Happy Life With Your New Puppy

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that as soon as you get your puppy, everything’s going to be hunky dory. After all, just look at their little face! Your life is going to be immeasurably better once you’ve got your canine companion by your side. However, this line of thinking is a little incorrect — it assumes that your enthusiasm will be all it takes to create a happy life for yourself and your new dog. This is not the case! You’ll need to actively work towards it. Below, we take a look at a few tried and tested methods to ensure that this comes to pass.

All In

It’s easy to want to a dog for all the positive attributes it brings, but what about the less positive side? When you get a puppy, you can’t just commit to, you know, long walks on sunny mornings and cozy evenings spent watching a movie with him or her by your side. You’ll also need to think about going for walks through the rain, or the limitations of having a dog — such as reduced travel freedom and so on. Once you commit to ALL aspects of dog ownership, it’ll be more straightforward.

Ironing Out the Kinks

Your puppy might look like an adorable teddy bear, but you’ll need to remember that hey, it’s actually a living creature, and they’re not going to naturally fit in with the human way of life without a little help. Everything will run a lot smoother for everyone if you and your pet participate in puppy training lessons. Inside the house and out in public, you’ll need to be able to communicate with your canine buddy — and it’s much easier to do so if they’ve received training.

Dedicating Time

Your dog isn’t one aspect of your life. Your dog is your life, from which you take breaks every now and again, such as when you go to work. Owning a pet isn’t about only doing the bare minimum; it’s about dedicating your time towards making sure that they’re living their best life. That means going for extra long walks at the weekend (or when you have time), as opposed to just doing the minimum, which would be two short walks a day. Spend time getting to know what your pet likes!

Get Into a Routine

Dogs are a bit like children — while they like special surprises, their day to day life should remain essentially the same. When you get a puppy, you’ll want to spend a few weeks trialing different ways of being until you stumble upon a routine that seems to work for everyone.

Part of the Family

Finally, remember to make your puppy part of the family as soon as they’re in your house! They like to live in a pack; you are now that pack. They’ll feel at ease and happy if they know they have trusted people around them. It’s good for you too — dogs give back all the love they receive and more.

A Pup Really Could Be Your Entire Family’s Best Friend!

Chances are that if you’re reading this post, you have some sort of interest in introducing a canine companion to your family unit. This could be one of the best decisions that you have ever made. Dogs make perfect pals and can also benefit your children greatly too. Kids with pups tend to be much kinder, healthier, calm, and comfortable. So, if you think that a four-legged friend could well be the perfect addition to your family, here’s absolutely everything that you need to know in order to meet their wants and needs!

Dog food is widely available and tends to be sold in almost any supermarket or corner shop. This isn’t all too surprising considering so many of us have canine companions. But not all dog foods are created equal and believe it or not, some will prove a whole lot better for your pet than others. Seeing as your dog is entirely dependent on you when it comes to eating a healthy and balanced diet that meets all of their nutritional needs, it’s extremely important that you don’t just throw down the cheapest or most convenient feed in their bowl each morning or night. You need to do your research to find what’s best! Another thing to bear in mind is that every breed requires different portions of food. A Yorkshire Terrier, for example, will require different portions to a cockapoo. So, do a little research regarding your dog’s breed and how much they should be eating. If you’re ever in doubt, consult your vet. They will be able to tell you whether your pooch is a healthy weight or not and will be able to recommend exact portion sizes for them as a unique individual.

All dogs have different coat types. However, generally speaking, there are six main coat types that you should familiarise yourself with – smooth, double, silky, wool, wire, and combination. The type of grooming that your pooch will require, as well as the length of their hair, will ultimately determine what grooming regime you will have to carry out for them. Most shorthaired molting breeds will only require an occasional bath at home. This is relatively simple to carry out yourself, as long as you are particularly careful around their eyes, and try to avoid letting the water running into their ears or mouth. Your vet can then clip their nails and take care of their anal glands. Long haired or non-molting dogs are likely to be a little more tricky, as their fur doesn’t shed, so will grow and need trimming. Curly haired dogs’ fur is also more prone to matting and will need to be brushed out. For these kinds of dogs, a trip to a professional groomer is preferable. These specially trained individuals will know how to wash, brush, and cut their fur into shape.

These are just two responsibilities that you will need to take on in order to keep your pooch happy and healthy! So, keep them in mind and ensure that you can cater to the breed you’re interested in before taking a new family member on!

Be careful of the pet food you choose!!

According to recent reports, more than 107 million cans of dog food have been recalled because they contained trace amounts of pentobarbital, the tranquilizer used to put down sick or injured animals.

Tim Evans, an associate professor of veterinary pathobiologyand head of toxicology in the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (VMDL) at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, stresses that while no measurable concentrations of pentobarbital should be in these products, pet owners should monitor resources for updates and notices for pet food recalls.

“The FDA plays a key role in preventing these situations and in protecting our pets when these situations arise,” Evans said. “For the last couple of years, I have been trying to disseminate information on what veterinarians and their clients can do when they suspect a pet food contamination. I firmly believe that the nutritional and health benefits of commercially manufactured pet foods, especially those manufactured by companies with a long history of dedication to pet nutrition and health, continue to greatly outweigh the low risks of contamination in these products.”

Evans says tools and resources are available for consumers to stay informed of pet food recalls such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMA).

“These resources will include information about manufacturer lot numbers and UPC item codes that will help owners pinpoint the food they might have purchased and whether they should monitor their pets’ behaviors and health,” Evans said. “Of course, if you see any changes in your pets’ health, contact your veterinarian immediately.”

Evans teaches clinical and diagnostic toxicology and presents lectures on poisonous plants. His research interests include developmental and reproductive toxicology and pathology. He is a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists and a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Toxicologists.

Shark® APEX™ DuoClean® Powered Lift-Away® Vacuum

I never thought I would be one of those people who not only have one but have two inside dogs. Growing up we never had animals in our home. So in adulthood, I really never liked having inside pets. That is of course before I met Buster. Buster was a tiny pound puppy Dachshund mix that I fell in love with at first sight. He was so tiny, I had to keep him in the house and of course, if he wasn’t sleeping with me he would cry. Shortly after Buster, my husband decides he had to have a Dachshund too so we bought Butch, this was over ten years ago.

Needless to say, I spent many days vacuuming up dog hair. I wanted to make sure my dog-friendly home, didn’t look like a dog home. I have major allergies and sinus issues so it was important for me to keep dog hair to a minimum. I would vacuum almost daily to assure minimum dog hair. Recently I was introduced to the Shark® APEX™ DuoClean® Powered Lift-Away® Vacuum I was so shocked at how much dog hair my other vacuum missed.

It literally looked like a brand new carpet when I was finished vacuuming. This vacuum is the best vacuum I have ever used. I have stairs and always hated dragging the vacuum up and down. With this vacuum, you are able to lift just the canister and take it upstairs. I could vacuum spots I haven’t been able to in years because of how flexible the Shark Apex is.

Air Wick Essential Mist Kit @ Walmart

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Air Wick®. The opinions and text are all mine.

I consider my home my sanctuary. I love walking through my door and knowing that it is time to relax and unwind. My home brings me happiness from the time I walk through the front door. I do worry though about others’ impressions when they walk into my home. You see I have two inside dogs. I love my two dogs and they are part of our family, but I don’t want everyone who walks in the door to automatically know this is a dog home. I prefer them to have the same impression as I do.

I love walking into a home that smells welcoming and has a fresh scent which is why I decided to try Air Wick Essential Mist Kits. One try and I was hooked.  From then on, I’ll never have to worry about visitors stopping by unexpectedly or what they will think as long as I have my home protected by Air Wick Essential Mist. I love the Lavender & Almond Blossom scent which I find calming and is conveniently available at Walmart. From 2/23/18 – 4/30/18 you can get a $1.50 off coupon here when you enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a $50,000 Air Wick Home Makeover or a $5,000 Air Wick Room Makeover.

I entertain a lot and am always prepared with Air Wick Essential Mist Kits. They are the perfect solution to refresh your home before entertaining, and they have other varieties such as Fresh Water Breeze and Mandarin and Sweet Orange. Everyone always compliments on how great my house smells, although we have two inside dogs, people don’t even realize it until I tell them.

I love knowing I am getting this at Walmart for the best price! I also love knowing Air Wick Essential Mist diffuses a natural essential oils infused fragrance. You can experience a divine blend of freshness and softness – the fresh aroma of lavender wrapped with the delicate, sweet and creamy floral of almond blossom – bringing you a feeling of freshness and cleanness.

Valentine’s Day Gifts List for him without breaking the bank !

After being married to the love of my life for almost 20 years I struggle coming up with awesome ideas for gifts for my husband. This year I was so excited because I found the perfect gift, the reason I know it is so great is that it was bought with love.

You see Valentine’s Day represents love, therefore, you shouldn’t put a price tag on it. Just buy something that makes them happy and is bought with love. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Love Printable Booklet These can be sweet or romantic or both, they can be silly or serious but make sure you are willing to do each one!!
  2. Family Picture or Picture of yourself Our dogs are our life, one year I took their pic and framed them. To this day, he still has this on his desk. Now that we have grands he loves pictures of them.
  3. Favorite meal and candlelight My husband is happiest when he is getting 100% complete attention from me, make it a special evening.
  4. Music Buy him few CD’s of his favorite musician, or of your romantic songs!
  5. Chocolate One of his favorite snacks is anything chocolate.

Of course, these are some of my favorite ideas. You can make it special without spending a lot of money. Remember Valentine’s Day is about spending time with a loved one and not stressing over the presents!

Home Ruined By Your Honking Hound?

A dog is always a welcome addition to a family. Even the most unruly hound can wiggle their way into heart and home. Once they’ve been with you for a while, it’s near enough impossible to imagine life any other way. They become as important as any other member of the family and get the VIP treatment.

Such is the joy of dog ownership. But, it isn’t all happiness and sunshine. Inviting an animal into your life isn’t all plain sailing. After all, these aren’t exactly the most domestic family members. When you’re not looking, your new family member could chew on all sorts, and leave unpleasant toilet surprises in the worst places. Even once you have their behavior under control, you need to consider their smell. In case you hadn’t realized yet; it isn’t always pretty. But, as no one wants to come home to a house which stinks of kennels, we’re going to look at how you can conquer the stench.

Freshen the air

Freshening the air in your home is always important, but it becomes more so when you have a dog around the place. There’s no getting around the fact that damp and stale stenches will haunt a stifled house. And, that only gets worse when a dog contributes to the stink. On top of the usual dampness of a family home, you’ll need to contend with the dog-related smells any owner comes to know. We’re talking hint of fox and dash of doggy doo. Not stuff you want to smell each time you come home. To help clear the air a little, it’s worth opening windows for at least half an hour each day. You could also invest in an air purifier, which would keep the air clear for the duration.

Better ways to scent the home

We’ve already established that the scents mentioned above aren’t desirable in the home. But, if you want to get rid, you need to find better fragrances to replace them. Obviously, candles work well here, but only when you’re there to light them. To make sure things are fresh when you get home, you could invest in something like the essential oil diffusers by Aromatech. These release scents through the day to ensure your nose stays happy when you enter the house. Plus, you can hook these up to your HVAC system to ensure they reach every corner of the house. Equally, you could invest in reed diffusers, and place these in your dog’s favorite rooms. Bear in mind, though, that you’ll need to replace these every few months to keep their scent on top.

Wash that dog bed

It’s also important to note that smell may not come directly from your dog. If you’ve washed them, and are still experiencing unpleasant wafts, you may need to wash their bed instead. Scents collect on the material and release their wrath on your home. So, either invest in odor resistant options or clean that dog bed on a regular basis.

Dealing With An Unruly Hound Without Pulling Your Hair Out

Most of us have an image in our minds of how we want our family to look. And for a lot of people that image is of them, their partner, their children, and a furry friend who rounds out the whole family perfectly. The addition of a dog who can help to make your life a whole lot more fun. They can bring huge amounts of joy and love into the lives of you and your family as well as give you the chance to offer a new lease of life to an animal that might not have had the best start in the world. But whether you’re getting a puppy or adopting an older dog, it’s important to remember that it’s not always going to be easy. Sure, in your mind you only see the best parts of living with a pet, but it’s important to remember that’s only half the picture. The other half can be seriously stressful as you attempt to deal with an unruly hound who’s determined to make as much of a mess of your home as possible and create huge amounts of stress in your life. With that in mind, here are a few ways that you can turn even the wildest pooch into a faithful and obedient companion.

Positive reinforcement

There are a lot of different schools of dog training out there, and for the most part, they each have their pros and cons. However, in recent years it’s been shown that if you really want to help your furry friend develop the skills and knowledge that you need from them, then positive reinforcement is the way to go. Previously, it was thought that a heavy hand when it came to discipline was the most effective training method but positive reinforcement can often have even better results as well as leaving your pooch feeling much happier and more comfortable. Make sure that you always have a decent amount of Betsy Farms real meat dog treats on hand so that when your dog does something good, you can reward them instantly. Over time your dog will begin to associate following your instructions with the positive feelings that they get when they’re munching on a treat, rather than the fear of any kind of punishment. It might take a little bit longer to train your dog this way, but it’s always better to train them in a way that keeps both you and them as happy as possible.

Whatever training method you choose, the most important thing is that you stick to it as much as possible. Changing the way that you train your dog from day to day is just going to leave them confused and you frustrated. Not only is it not going to have the kind of impact that you really want but it could also end undoing all the hard work that you’ve put in before. The last thing you want is to spend a huge amount of time training your dog one way, only to undo all of that work by teaching them something completely different the next day. It can be frustrating when it feels like the training is slow going and that’s when the temptation to change things up is going to be at its highest, but stick to the way you’ve been doing things, and you will start to see results sooner rather than later.

You have to be committed

Of course, that’s only going to happen if you’re actually willing to put in the kind of time and energy that’s really necessary to get the results that you want. If you’re taking a lazy, non-committal approach to training your dog, then don’t be surprised if it doesn’t really stick. It takes time to form habits and understanding, and dogs need that level of commitment from you in order to understand what they should be doing. Don’t assume that you only need to try a couple of simple things and then you can just get back to lazing around on the couch all day long!

Get the whole family involved

Of course, just because training your dog is hard work doesn’t mean that you have to do it all on your own. Why not get the whole family involved so that you spread the hard work across all of you. That way not only do you get a break every now and then but you can be sure that your furry friend’s training is totally consistent. After all, the last thing you want is to spend all of your time training them only to have well-meaning family members undo all of your hard work by spoiling the dog too much. Make sure that you and your family all understand the method that you’re using to train your pet as well as ensuring that you all spend an equal amount of time doing it so that no one ends up feeling like they’ve been short-changed. After all, you’re bringing in a new addition for the benefit of the whole family so it only makes sense that the whole family should chip in and help to train it. Of course, this is still going to take a fair amount of time, but it will almost certainly be a much faster and easier process if your whole family chips in and helps.

The truth is that owning a pet is a lot of hard work. Sure, the joy that they bring into your life can be worth it, but you need to consider if it’s a responsibility that you’re ready for. Not only do you need to make sure that you have the time and patience for training them, but you need to be sure that you can afford it as well. There are so many factors that go into figuring out if you’re ready to bring a furry addition into your home that you need to take a long time thinking about whether or not it’s actually the right decision for you and your family.

Surprising Home Additions Against A Breathing Tax

In 2014, the biggest airport in Venezuela decided to charge a fee to their passengers for the right to inhale clean air, also referred to as the breathing air tax by angry social media users who wasted no time in pulling down the airport. A user immediately complained about the £12 tax in Maiquetia International Airport with the following tweet:

“Could you explain to me the ozone thing in Maiquetia? The toilets don’t have water, the air-con is broken, there are stray dogs inside the airport, but there’s ozone?”

Ozone was part of a new system installed to purify the air and protect the health of the travelers Needless to say that travelers took to the social media to make fun of the new tax. You may think it’s infuriating, funny or plain ridiculous. But when you think about it, there’s something deadly serious about the breathing tax, and that is that the air you breathe is not clean. Surprising as it might sound, the statement also includes indoor air.

Keeping the air fresh

The air in your home needs to be renewed regularly. There’s a household habit in Germany that insists on opening all windows for one hour every day, even at the heart of winter. The advantage is that you can fill your house with fresh air and stimulate indoor air circulation. You can also add an AC system to keep the air circulating freely between rooms. This will ensure that your house keeps a high air quality at all time. Additionally, keeping the rooms ventilated means that there is a lot less possibility for mold growth to settle and spread. A functioning AC unit, indeed, reduces the moisture in your home. However, you need to organize regular servicing with professional air conditioning companies. When the unit is damaged or contaminated, it can spread unhealthy bacterial presence throughout your home. As a rule of the thumb,; new units should be checked yearly.

Ventilate your home

Keeping the air clear

How do you keep the air pure inside your home? If you think that pollution is only reserved for the outdoors, you need to think again. Cleaning products, chemicals, fragrances, formaldehyde and other toxins are present in all households. They can gradually put your health at risk as unhealthy particles spread in the air. But thankfully, you can rely on decorative houseplants to purify your indoor effectively. Bamboo palms, for example, are great against chemical contaminants like formaldehyde and benzene. Boston fern is one of the best plants against air pollutants, and it can even add beneficial humidity to the dry air.

Indoor plants that clean the air

Keeping the air clean

Finally, you can also play a significant role in the cleanliness of your indoor air. Weekly or bi-weekly vacuuming can get rid of dust particles in the air and also reduce the risk of mold infestation. Additionally, it allows you to control the presence of allergens in your home, such as pollen or pet hair. Keeping things clean and tidy is, by far, the best approach to purify indoor air.

You may not be ready to pay a breathing tax, but you can certainly make sure that the indoor air is breathable and healthy. Maybe purification is the way to stop a tax on the air in your home!
