3 Things Your Dog Would Want You To Know

Have you ever wished your dog could talk?

Those times when he barks constantly, and you have no idea why. The times when he looks at you with pleading eyes, but you really don’t know what it is he is after. If he had the capacity to speak, he would be able to communicate to you his feelings and desires. But unfortunately, he doesn’t have those words to offer you.

But if your dog could talk, these are just some of the things we imagine he would probably want you to know.

1: “I don’t misbehave to annoy you.”

How many times have you rebuked your dog for misbehaving? How many times have you taken it personally? As dog owners, we often ask ourselves why our dogs can misbehave so badly, despite our best efforts to care for them. Shouldn’t they be more grateful? And shouldn’t they show gratitude through good behavior?

Here’s the thing. Quite often, dogs misbehave for a number of reasons, none of them out of malice or revenge for you. When dogs are left alone for a long time, they can become anxious and have toileting accidents. When dogs are bored, they can start to entertain themselves by chewing on such things as your slippers. As the dog owner, you can alleviate such instances. You might ask a neighbor to pop in to keep your dog company, for example. And you might spend more time playing with your dog, instead of neglecting them while you watch the television. There are all kinds of causes and solutions to doggy misbehavior, some of which you can deal with yourself, and some of which might require the assistance of a training specialist if things get out of hand. So, don’t take your dog’s misbehavior personally, even if he does always target your slippers.

  1. “I am head over paws in love with you.”

Have you ever woken up in the morning, only to be greeted with a slurping kiss and bad breath? Have you ever come home from work, only to be welcomed by your dog with an excited bark and an outstretched paw? Our tendency is to push our dogs away with irritation and annoyance, but the truth is this: your dog does it because he loves you!

Dogs crave human interaction. When they greet you unceremoniously, or when they look up at you with puppy-dog eyes, its because they want to be with you. Your dog is your best friend, whether you like it or not. Therefore, return that friendship. Give them the attention they crave with a kiss and a cuddle. Play fetch with them in the park. Take them on long walks. Your dog’s love for you is unconditional, despite those moments when you have lost patience because of another chewed-up slipper. So, the least you can do is return the favor and show your dog some love in return.

  1. “I will eat anything.”

Chances are, when your dog is barking or looking up at you with pleading eyes, he probably wants to feed again. Dogs love food, and other than your company, having something to eat is something guaranteed to get them out of bed in the morning. And even after you have fed your dog, he will probably be on the hunt for more food. That leftover sausage on your plate? Your dog will deal with that faster than you can say “I was saving that for later.”

Dogs will eat anything, from the food you put out for them, to anything else that takes their fancy – even their own poop! As a dog owner, you need to be alert to this. You need to be mindful of the food you give them, only giving them the correct portions for their breed and size. You need to avoid giving them human food, some of which could be deadly. And you need to care for your dog’s dental needs, such as brushing their teeth to remove any food that could cause gum disease and giving them breathe spray to neutralize growing bacteria and stinking dog breath. Your dog won’t have the know-how to eat a healthy diet, and they don’t have the skills to care for their digestion and teeth properly, so you need to be there for them. Manage their diet, take them to the vet for a dental checkup, and go easy on the treats!

Final word

If your dog could talk, we are sure they would communicate the above to you. But as they don’t talk, you can still get an idea of what is they want by their actions. That chewed slipper will let you know they are bored. That sloppy kiss will let you know your dog loves you. And chances are, those frustrated barks and begging paws are probably signs that yes, your dog wants to feed again! Perhaps it is easier to know what your dogs want than you thought!

How to Keep Your Home Clean With Dogs

It can seem like a never-ending battle when you have dogs and you like to keep a clean house. Endless amounts of hair can be found under the sofas and in the rugs. Dirty paw prints are traipsed all through the floors and that wet dog smell just won’t go away. You love them like your children but you wish there was a way of keeping everything clean while letting them enjoy themselves. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Groom Your Dog

All dogs moult. It varies how much dogs of different breeds moult but even if you have a short haired dog, you’ll still find hair everywhere. To stop your dogs from shedding all over your furniture, it’s important to brush them at least 3 times a week; more if your dog has long hair. The more hair on your dog, the more can fall off, so make sure your dog’s hair is cut by a professional groomer on a regular basis. It’s not just to save your furniture. Your dog will need to be cut to stay cool during the warmer months.

Install an Outside Tap

Most of our dogs go to the toilet in our gardens at least three times a day. During the Summer months, if the garden isn’t cleaned properly, the smell can intensify. The last thing you want is a waft of something nasty every time you open the back door. Consider installing an outside tap by contacting your local plumbers. The job takes less than an hour usually, and it doesn’t cost much. You can then attach a hose pipe to the tap and you’ve got a way of quickly getting rid of the smell. You can also pick up pet friendly disinfectants at local pet stores.

Pet Vacuum

When you need to replace your vacuum, it’s worth investing in a vacuum designed for cleaning pet mess. Not only will it be easier to remove hair from furniture and carpets, the sharp suction also allows you to clean up dirty paw prints when your dog has been on a wet or muddy walk. Of course, it’s important to clean your dog’s paws before they enter the main house, but you can never guarantee you’ll get every piece of dirt off them.

Go for Walks

Exercising your dog is more important than you may think when it comes to keeping your house clean. This is especially important for younger dogs because it ensures their energy is lowered and they’ll have less interest in being destructive. So, if you a cushion you’re particularly fond of, make sure your dog is stimulated both physically and mentally. When a dog is tired, it’s more likely to obey your commands than get into mischief. So, if you tell your dog to wait at the door while you get a towel to dry it’s fur off, it will be more inclined to please you and obey.

It may be hard keeping up with mucky pups but the loyalty and companionship you receive in return makes it all worth it.

Hasbro’s Joy for All Companion Pets Dog Cat #Hasbro #Joyforall

This post was sponsored by Hasbro’s Joy For All brand as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central. All opinions expressed in my post are my own.

Growing up close to my grandparents was amazing. I was so fortunate to have had them right down the road. Now that I am grown, I feel like I appreciate them more. We lost our grandmother a few years ago and if it wasn’t for Bella, my grandfather’s black lab mix, my grandfather probably wouldn’t have dealt with her loss as good as he did. They were married for a long time.

Recently we lost Bella to old age, this has been really hard on my grandfather. When I stop by to visit, some days he will ask me to let Bella out. Some days he will talk about missing her so much. We are moving him soon to a retirement villa where we can keep a better eye out on him so getting another dog is just not an option.

I was so relieved and excited to have found the Hasbro’s Joy for All Puppy. I took it to my grandfather and he was so happy he cried. It made me feel good knowing that he has a purpose again. Therefore he will continue to live a happier life. The puppy is so much like a real dog that he kept saying I hope they let me keep him at my new home. I wasn’t sure if he realized it wasn’t a real dog. He talked to it and was holding it and petting it. I love the fact I don’t have to worry about him forgetting to take the dog potty or feeding him.

I love knowing this dog will be around a long time because Hasbro has a long tradition of creating the world’s best play experiences, and the Joy For All brand represents an extension of that tradition, striving to bring happiness and fun to aging loved ones and their families. They are amazing at not only make toys that last but making items that even my grandfather can play with.

I taught him how to mute the dog for night time, and how to turn him on and off. This is a perfect companion for those aging love ones that don’t really need the responsibility of a pet, but long for one. He started calling him Buddy, saying he is my bud now. Of course, he calls me my sister’s names but he can remember his new companions name.

You can talk to the dog and it will respond so you feel as though it is real, especially with its soft fur! The batteries are already included and can be used right out of the box. Of course, we have always been a dog family but they have the cutest Cat Companion also just in case your loved one prefers a cat!

Texas Pete Hot Sauce Perfect for Chili Dogs!! #tailgate

Chili Dog Mix – Texas Pete Hot Sauce

I am in charge of the chili for our tailgating party so each year I work on a new twist to my recipe to make that perfect chili for our hot dogs. I love trying different products to make the perfect chili, and since I do not like heart burn, I have found that making it from scratch is my best method and the one that gets the most raves. Of course my secret is the Texas Pete Hot Sauce. Without it my recipe is bland but the minute I add it everyone comments on how awesome it is.

Here is my secret recipe to making the best tailgating chili ever…

2 pounds of hamburger meat sauteed with onion a little garlic salt, salt and pepper. (Cook until fully cooked then drain grease).

1 Can Tomato paste, about 4 to 5 tomatoes, I love using fresh chopped up.

Chili powder to taste, more salt and pepper.

I used dried kidney beans, soak for one hour, boil for one hour drain and then add to sauce. (they need to cook about 90 minutes to be fully cooked).

Add about 10 drops of Texas Pete’s Hot Sauce.

Stir and let cook on low for about two hours. I usually add about 5 – 10 more drops of Texas Pete before serving. This gives it the best flavor.

We use Texas Pete’s Hot Sauce on just about everything from grilled oysters to Bloody Mary’s. This flavor is good with everything! If you are looking for something not too hot with a good flavor that everyone will enjoy then you need to try it!

Texas Pete

We also like to use it on wings, soak the wings in the Texas Pete overnight and then grill them with a little salt and they are a hit especially at our tailgates.

Building a Happy Life With Your New Puppy

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that as soon as you get your puppy, everything’s going to be hunky dory. After all, just look at their little face! Your life is going to be immeasurably better once you’ve got your canine companion by your side. However, this line of thinking is a little incorrect — it assumes that your enthusiasm will be all it takes to create a happy life for yourself and your new dog. This is not the case! You’ll need to actively work towards it. Below, we take a look at a few tried and tested methods to ensure that this comes to pass.

All In

It’s easy to want to a dog for all the positive attributes it brings, but what about the less positive side? When you get a puppy, you can’t just commit to, you know, long walks on sunny mornings and cozy evenings spent watching a movie with him or her by your side. You’ll also need to think about going for walks through the rain, or the limitations of having a dog — such as reduced travel freedom and so on. Once you commit to ALL aspects of dog ownership, it’ll be more straightforward.

Ironing Out the Kinks

Your puppy might look like an adorable teddy bear, but you’ll need to remember that hey, it’s actually a living creature, and they’re not going to naturally fit in with the human way of life without a little help. Everything will run a lot smoother for everyone if you and your pet participate in puppy training lessons. Inside the house and out in public, you’ll need to be able to communicate with your canine buddy — and it’s much easier to do so if they’ve received training.

Dedicating Time

Your dog isn’t one aspect of your life. Your dog is your life, from which you take breaks every now and again, such as when you go to work. Owning a pet isn’t about only doing the bare minimum; it’s about dedicating your time towards making sure that they’re living their best life. That means going for extra long walks at the weekend (or when you have time), as opposed to just doing the minimum, which would be two short walks a day. Spend time getting to know what your pet likes!

Get Into a Routine

Dogs are a bit like children — while they like special surprises, their day to day life should remain essentially the same. When you get a puppy, you’ll want to spend a few weeks trialing different ways of being until you stumble upon a routine that seems to work for everyone.

Part of the Family

Finally, remember to make your puppy part of the family as soon as they’re in your house! They like to live in a pack; you are now that pack. They’ll feel at ease and happy if they know they have trusted people around them. It’s good for you too — dogs give back all the love they receive and more.

A Pup Really Could Be Your Entire Family’s Best Friend!

Chances are that if you’re reading this post, you have some sort of interest in introducing a canine companion to your family unit. This could be one of the best decisions that you have ever made. Dogs make perfect pals and can also benefit your children greatly too. Kids with pups tend to be much kinder, healthier, calm, and comfortable. So, if you think that a four-legged friend could well be the perfect addition to your family, here’s absolutely everything that you need to know in order to meet their wants and needs!

Dog food is widely available and tends to be sold in almost any supermarket or corner shop. This isn’t all too surprising considering so many of us have canine companions. But not all dog foods are created equal and believe it or not, some will prove a whole lot better for your pet than others. Seeing as your dog is entirely dependent on you when it comes to eating a healthy and balanced diet that meets all of their nutritional needs, it’s extremely important that you don’t just throw down the cheapest or most convenient feed in their bowl each morning or night. You need to do your research to find what’s best! Another thing to bear in mind is that every breed requires different portions of food. A Yorkshire Terrier, for example, will require different portions to a cockapoo. So, do a little research regarding your dog’s breed and how much they should be eating. If you’re ever in doubt, consult your vet. They will be able to tell you whether your pooch is a healthy weight or not and will be able to recommend exact portion sizes for them as a unique individual.

All dogs have different coat types. However, generally speaking, there are six main coat types that you should familiarise yourself with – smooth, double, silky, wool, wire, and combination. The type of grooming that your pooch will require, as well as the length of their hair, will ultimately determine what grooming regime you will have to carry out for them. Most shorthaired molting breeds will only require an occasional bath at home. This is relatively simple to carry out yourself, as long as you are particularly careful around their eyes, and try to avoid letting the water running into their ears or mouth. Your vet can then clip their nails and take care of their anal glands. Long haired or non-molting dogs are likely to be a little more tricky, as their fur doesn’t shed, so will grow and need trimming. Curly haired dogs’ fur is also more prone to matting and will need to be brushed out. For these kinds of dogs, a trip to a professional groomer is preferable. These specially trained individuals will know how to wash, brush, and cut their fur into shape.

These are just two responsibilities that you will need to take on in order to keep your pooch happy and healthy! So, keep them in mind and ensure that you can cater to the breed you’re interested in before taking a new family member on!

Be careful of the pet food you choose!!

According to recent reports, more than 107 million cans of dog food have been recalled because they contained trace amounts of pentobarbital, the tranquilizer used to put down sick or injured animals.

Tim Evans, an associate professor of veterinary pathobiologyand head of toxicology in the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (VMDL) at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, stresses that while no measurable concentrations of pentobarbital should be in these products, pet owners should monitor resources for updates and notices for pet food recalls.

“The FDA plays a key role in preventing these situations and in protecting our pets when these situations arise,” Evans said. “For the last couple of years, I have been trying to disseminate information on what veterinarians and their clients can do when they suspect a pet food contamination. I firmly believe that the nutritional and health benefits of commercially manufactured pet foods, especially those manufactured by companies with a long history of dedication to pet nutrition and health, continue to greatly outweigh the low risks of contamination in these products.”

Evans says tools and resources are available for consumers to stay informed of pet food recalls such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMA).

“These resources will include information about manufacturer lot numbers and UPC item codes that will help owners pinpoint the food they might have purchased and whether they should monitor their pets’ behaviors and health,” Evans said. “Of course, if you see any changes in your pets’ health, contact your veterinarian immediately.”

Evans teaches clinical and diagnostic toxicology and presents lectures on poisonous plants. His research interests include developmental and reproductive toxicology and pathology. He is a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists and a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Toxicologists.

Shark® APEX™ DuoClean® Powered Lift-Away® Vacuum

I never thought I would be one of those people who not only have one but have two inside dogs. Growing up we never had animals in our home. So in adulthood, I really never liked having inside pets. That is of course before I met Buster. Buster was a tiny pound puppy Dachshund mix that I fell in love with at first sight. He was so tiny, I had to keep him in the house and of course, if he wasn’t sleeping with me he would cry. Shortly after Buster, my husband decides he had to have a Dachshund too so we bought Butch, this was over ten years ago.

Needless to say, I spent many days vacuuming up dog hair. I wanted to make sure my dog-friendly home, didn’t look like a dog home. I have major allergies and sinus issues so it was important for me to keep dog hair to a minimum. I would vacuum almost daily to assure minimum dog hair. Recently I was introduced to the Shark® APEX™ DuoClean® Powered Lift-Away® Vacuum I was so shocked at how much dog hair my other vacuum missed.

It literally looked like a brand new carpet when I was finished vacuuming. This vacuum is the best vacuum I have ever used. I have stairs and always hated dragging the vacuum up and down. With this vacuum, you are able to lift just the canister and take it upstairs. I could vacuum spots I haven’t been able to in years because of how flexible the Shark Apex is.

Shark® APEX™ delivers Shark’s ultimate cleaning experience in a full-sized upright vacuum. Equipped with DuoClean® Technology, it grabs large particles, pulls in piles, and directly engages hard floors for a beautiful, polished look. Air Wick Essential Mist Kit @ Walmart

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Air Wick®. The opinions and text are all mine.

I consider my home my sanctuary. I love walking through my door and knowing that it is time to relax and unwind. My home brings me happiness from the time I walk through the front door. I do worry though about others’ impressions when they walk into my home. You see I have two inside dogs. I love my two dogs and they are part of our family, but I don’t want everyone who walks in the door to automatically know this is a dog home. I prefer them to have the same impression as I do.

I love walking into a home that smells welcoming and has a fresh scent which is why I decided to try Air Wick Essential Mist Kits. One try and I was hooked.  From then on, I’ll never have to worry about visitors stopping by unexpectedly or what they will think as long as I have my home protected by Air Wick Essential Mist. I love the Lavender & Almond Blossom scent which I find calming and is conveniently available at Walmart. From 2/23/18 – 4/30/18 you can get a $1.50 off coupon here when you enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a $50,000 Air Wick Home Makeover or a $5,000 Air Wick Room Makeover.

I entertain a lot and am always prepared with Air Wick Essential Mist Kits. They are the perfect solution to refresh your home before entertaining, and they have other varieties such as Fresh Water Breeze and Mandarin and Sweet Orange. Everyone always compliments on how great my house smells, although we have two inside dogs, people don’t even realize it until I tell them.

I love knowing I am getting this at Walmart for the best price! I also love knowing Air Wick Essential Mist diffuses a natural essential oils infused fragrance. You can experience a divine blend of freshness and softness – the fresh aroma of lavender wrapped with the delicate, sweet and creamy floral of almond blossom – bringing you a feeling of freshness and cleanness.

Valentine’s Day Gifts List for him without breaking the bank !

After being married to the love of my life for almost 20 years I struggle coming up with awesome ideas for gifts for my husband. This year I was so excited because I found the perfect gift, the reason I know it is so great is that it was bought with love.

You see Valentine’s Day represents love, therefore, you shouldn’t put a price tag on it. Just buy something that makes them happy and is bought with love. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Love Printable Booklet These can be sweet or romantic or both, they can be silly or serious but make sure you are willing to do each one!!
  2. Family Picture or Picture of yourself Our dogs are our life, one year I took their pic and framed them. To this day, he still has this on his desk. Now that we have grands he loves pictures of them.
  3. Favorite meal and candlelight My husband is happiest when he is getting 100% complete attention from me, make it a special evening.
  4. Music Buy him few CD’s of his favorite musician, or of your romantic songs!
  5. Chocolate One of his favorite snacks is anything chocolate.

Of course, these are some of my favorite ideas. You can make it special without spending a lot of money. Remember Valentine’s Day is about spending time with a loved one and not stressing over the presents!

Home Ruined By Your Honking Hound?

A dog is always a welcome addition to a family. Even the most unruly hound can wiggle their way into heart and home. Once they’ve been with you for a while, it’s near enough impossible to imagine life any other way. They become as important as any other member of the family and get the VIP treatment.

Such is the joy of dog ownership. But, it isn’t all happiness and sunshine. Inviting an animal into your life isn’t all plain sailing. After all, these aren’t exactly the most domestic family members. When you’re not looking, your new family member could chew on all sorts, and leave unpleasant toilet surprises in the worst places. Even once you have their behavior under control, you need to consider their smell. In case you hadn’t realized yet; it isn’t always pretty. But, as no one wants to come home to a house which stinks of kennels, we’re going to look at how you can conquer the stench.

Freshen the air

Freshening the air in your home is always important, but it becomes more so when you have a dog around the place. There’s no getting around the fact that damp and stale stenches will haunt a stifled house. And, that only gets worse when a dog contributes to the stink. On top of the usual dampness of a family home, you’ll need to contend with the dog-related smells any owner comes to know. We’re talking hint of fox and dash of doggy doo. Not stuff you want to smell each time you come home. To help clear the air a little, it’s worth opening windows for at least half an hour each day. You could also invest in an air purifier, which would keep the air clear for the duration.

Pexels Image

Better ways to scent the home

We’ve already established that the scents mentioned above aren’t desirable in the home. But, if you want to get rid, you need to find better fragrances to replace them. Obviously, candles work well here, but only when you’re there to light them. To make sure things are fresh when you get home, you could invest in something like the essential oil diffusers by Aromatech. These release scents through the day to ensure your nose stays happy when you enter the house. Plus, you can hook these up to your HVAC system to ensure they reach every corner of the house. Equally, you could invest in reed diffusers, and place these in your dog’s favorite rooms. Bear in mind, though, that you’ll need to replace these every few months to keep their scent on top.

Wash that dog bed

It’s also important to note that smell may not come directly from your dog. If you’ve washed them, and are still experiencing unpleasant wafts, you may need to wash their bed instead. Scents collect on the material and release their wrath on your home. So, either invest in odor resistant options or clean that dog bed on a regular basis.

Dealing With An Unruly Hound Without Pulling Your Hair Out

Most of us have an image in our minds of how we want our family to look. And for a lot of people that image is of them, their partner, their children, and a furry friend who rounds out the whole family perfectly. The addition of a dog who can help to make your life a whole lot more fun. They can bring huge amounts of joy and love into the lives of you and your family as well as give you the chance to offer a new lease of life to an animal that might not have had the best start in the world. But whether you’re getting a puppy or adopting an older dog, it’s important to remember that it’s not always going to be easy. Sure, in your mind you only see the best parts of living with a pet, but it’s important to remember that’s only half the picture. The other half can be seriously stressful as you attempt to deal with an unruly hound who’s determined to make as much of a mess of your home as possible and create huge amounts of stress in your life. With that in mind, here are a few ways that you can turn even the wildest pooch into a faithful and obedient companion.

Positive reinforcement

There are a lot of different schools of dog training out there, and for the most part, they each have their pros and cons. However, in recent years it’s been shown that if you really want to help your furry friend develop the skills and knowledge that you need from them, then positive reinforcement is the way to go. Previously, it was thought that a heavy hand when it came to discipline was the most effective training method but positive reinforcement can often have even better results as well as leaving your pooch feeling much happier and more comfortable. Make sure that you always have a decent amount of Betsy Farms real meat dog treats on hand so that when your dog does something good, you can reward them instantly. Over time your dog will begin to associate following your instructions with the positive feelings that they get when they’re munching on a treat, rather than the fear of any kind of punishment. It might take a little bit longer to train your dog this way, but it’s always better to train them in a way that keeps both you and them as happy as possible.

Whatever training method you choose, the most important thing is that you stick to it as much as possible. Changing the way that you train your dog from day to day is just going to leave them confused and you frustrated. Not only is it not going to have the kind of impact that you really want but it could also end undoing all the hard work that you’ve put in before. The last thing you want is to spend a huge amount of time training your dog one way, only to undo all of that work by teaching them something completely different the next day. It can be frustrating when it feels like the training is slow going and that’s when the temptation to change things up is going to be at its highest, but stick to the way you’ve been doing things, and you will start to see results sooner rather than later.

You have to be committed

Of course, that’s only going to happen if you’re actually willing to put in the kind of time and energy that’s really necessary to get the results that you want. If you’re taking a lazy, non-committal approach to training your dog, then don’t be surprised if it doesn’t really stick. It takes time to form habits and understanding, and dogs need that level of commitment from you in order to understand what they should be doing. Don’t assume that you only need to try a couple of simple things and then you can just get back to lazing around on the couch all day long!

Get the whole family involved

Of course, just because training your dog is hard work doesn’t mean that you have to do it all on your own. Why not get the whole family involved so that you spread the hard work across all of you. That way not only do you get a break every now and then but you can be sure that your furry friend’s training is totally consistent. After all, the last thing you want is to spend all of your time training them only to have well-meaning family members undo all of your hard work by spoiling the dog too much. Make sure that you and your family all understand the method that you’re using to train your pet as well as ensuring that you all spend an equal amount of time doing it so that no one ends up feeling like they’ve been short-changed. After all, you’re bringing in a new addition for the benefit of the whole family so it only makes sense that the whole family should chip in and help to train it. Of course, this is still going to take a fair amount of time, but it will almost certainly be a much faster and easier process if your whole family chips in and helps.

The truth is that owning a pet is a lot of hard work. Sure, the joy that they bring into your life can be worth it, but you need to consider if it’s a responsibility that you’re ready for. Not only do you need to make sure that you have the time and patience for training them, but you need to be sure that you can afford it as well. There are so many factors that go into figuring out if you’re ready to bring a furry addition into your home that you need to take a long time thinking about whether or not it’s actually the right decision for you and your family.

Surprising Home Additions Against A Breathing Tax

In 2014, the biggest airport in Venezuela decided to charge a fee to their passengers for the right to inhale clean air, also referred to as the breathing air tax by angry social media users who wasted no time in pulling down the airport. A user immediately complained about the £12 tax in Maiquetia International Airport with the following tweet:

“Could you explain to me the ozone thing in Maiquetia? The toilets don’t have water, the air-con is broken, there are stray dogs inside the airport, but there’s ozone?”

Ozone was part of a new system installed to purify the air and protect the health of the travelers Needless to say that travelers took to the social media to make fun of the new tax. You may think it’s infuriating, funny or plain ridiculous. But when you think about it, there’s something deadly serious about the breathing tax, and that is that the air you breathe is not clean. Surprising as it might sound, the statement also includes indoor air.

Keeping the air fresh

The air in your home needs to be renewed regularly. There’s a household habit in Germany that insists on opening all windows for one hour every day, even at the heart of winter. The advantage is that you can fill your house with fresh air and stimulate indoor air circulation. You can also add an AC system to keep the air circulating freely between rooms. This will ensure that your house keeps a high air quality at all time. Additionally, keeping the rooms ventilated means that there is a lot less possibility for mold growth to settle and spread. A functioning AC unit, indeed, reduces the moisture in your home. However, you need to organize regular servicing with professional air conditioning companies. When the unit is damaged or contaminated, it can spread unhealthy bacterial presence throughout your home. As a rule of the thumb,; new units should be checked yearly.

Ventilate your home

Keeping the air clear

How do you keep the air pure inside your home? If you think that pollution is only reserved for the outdoors, you need to think again. Cleaning products, chemicals, fragrances, formaldehyde and other toxins are present in all households. They can gradually put your health at risk as unhealthy particles spread in the air. But thankfully, you can rely on decorative houseplants to purify your indoor effectively. Bamboo palms, for example, are great against chemical contaminants like formaldehyde and benzene. Boston fern is one of the best plants against air pollutants, and it can even add beneficial humidity to the dry air.

Indoor plants that clean the air

Keeping the air clean

Finally, you can also play a significant role in the cleanliness of your indoor air. Weekly or bi-weekly vacuuming can get rid of dust particles in the air and also reduce the risk of mold infestation. Additionally, it allows you to control the presence of allergens in your home, such as pollen or pet hair. Keeping things clean and tidy is, by far, the best approach to purify indoor air.

You may not be ready to pay a breathing tax, but you can certainly make sure that the indoor air is breathable and healthy. Maybe purification is the way to stop a tax on the air in your home!

Moving with Your Mutt

Moving home isn’t just stressful for humans – it can be pretty tough for your four-legged friends too.

If you have a dog, you can’t expect to move without making any plans to ensure that he or she is okay – there are lots of things you’ll need to think about before the movers descend. Here are some of the most important considerations that will help to keep your dog safe and well when you leave your old home behind for pastures new:

Invest in Travel Equipment

Investing in a few items that will make traveling with your dog easier, such as car-safe dog crates, seat belt harnesses or mesh and a bed that will help to keep your dog safe in the trunk of your car is something you should think about doing as soon as you know you’re moving. That way, you can get your dog used to using them, by driving them around the block a few times, so that, when the time comes to move for real, they’ll be as safe and comfortable as possible.

Segregate Your Dog

When the movers descend, you’re going to want to have your dog locked safely away in one specific room, or if they have a kennel outside, that’ll be a safe place to let them stay. Make sure you put up a sign so the moving company know where your dog is so that they won’t let home out where he could get injured.

If your dog is really stressful, then you may want to think about sending him to boarding kennels until you’re ready to transport him to your new home.  Sedation is also an option, but you’ll have to discuss whether that is appropriate with your vet.

safety first.

Feed Your Dog Well Before Traveling

If you feed your dog well before traveling to your new home, she’s less likely to need as many bathroom stops and more likely to sleep. Which brings us to…

Exercise and Lots of It

Before you head off to your new home, try to exercise your pooch as much as possible so that he’s worn out and won’t be worried by the journey.

Keep Him on the Leash

When you first arrive in your new neighborhood, even if your pup is well-trained and you usually allow him to walk off the leash (providing it’s permitted), it is probably a good idea to keep him on the leash until he’s had time to explore the neighborhood. You never know what enticing things might be around the corner, after all, and new environments can male dogs act unusually, so it’s better safe than sorry.

Tag Him

Because your dog is more likely to run away from a new home, it is also vital that you either have him microchipped or fitted with a collar and tag that contains your contact information for your new home. So many people forget this, and they end up spending a few harrowing hours or even days looking for their poor missing pooch!

Follow this advice, and you should have no trouble moving with your mutt!

9 Ways to Get Fit by Accident

Image via Public Domain Pictures

There are millions of people in the world who know that they really should be getting more exercise, but who just find it difficult to fit the constant gym sessions into their daily routines.

But what if it was possible to get into shape, lose weight, and feel better, without any conventional exercise program, expensive home gym, or personal trainer?

In ages past, long before the internet, or even gas furnaces, it was natural for everyone to become effortlessly fit without even thinking about it. Days working the land, or, in hunter-gatherer times, stalking prey, meant that physical activity was innate. It was just something that everyone got plenty of, like it or not.

Today it takes a bit more work — but there are still ways of making physical activity, and fitness, a natural part of your life. Here are a few suggestions.

Take the stairs

“Take the stairs rather than the elevator” is probably one of the most commonly given bits of advice for people struggling to shed some pounds and improve their cardiovascular conditioning, and for good reason. It’s simple, and it works.

If you work or spend any significant portion of your time in the city, it’s all but inevitable that you’ll find yourself in high-rise buildings on a fairly regular basis, having to choose between the elevator and the stairs.

As simple (and inconvenient) as it seems, simply choosing to take the stairs more often than not can have a surprisingly positive impact on overall health and fitness. Your legs will really feel the burn, and before long you’ll be panting, with your heart and lungs getting a great workout.

Get a standing desk

One of the big new innovations in workplace furniture in recent times has been the standing desk — and it’s been a great innovation for overall health and fitness in the workplace, and in home offices, alike.

It’s well known today that sitting for extended periods of time carries with it an array of negative health consequences. In fact, it’s been reported that staying seated for a majority of your day may be even more harmful than cigarettes for the body and that it contributes massively to risk of all-cause mortality, or, dying from any cause.

Standing desks are bits of furniture which elevate your workstation to standing height, and allow you to work as normal, while on your feet. Most of them are easily adjustable so that they can be lowered back to a seated position as required (standing all day isn’t great for you either, after all) and some even include built-in treadmills so you can walk and work at the same time.

Use the Pomodoro Technique and then walk around

The Pomodoro Technique is a famous productivity hack which involves using a timer (originally a kitchen timer) to set periods of intense, all-out work focus, interspersed with small breaks in order to stay motivated and to refresh your mental energy.

The Pomodoro Technique involves working for 25-minute blocks, followed by 5-minute breaks, and is widely regarded as an excellent way of increasing focus and motivation in the office. Regardless of what kind of work you do, you’d be wise to look into using the Pomodoro Technique to give you an extra edge.

Instead of just using your 5-minute Pomodoro break to surf the web, listen to music, or check your phone, however, you’d be much better served by getting out of your chair, and going for a walk around the office, and having a good stretch at the same time.

Though walking is one of the easiest, least stressful forms of exercise out there, it’s also one of the most effective, with research finding that those who walk the most on a day-to-day basis have better health outcomes and mood overall.

Start off your day with a simple exercise routine

There’s a  fantastic feeling of accomplishment and refreshment that comes with doing some exercise at the very beginning of the day. While some people may opt for intense predawn workouts, like marathon training, or driving down to the gym for a max-effort squat session, simply having a straightforward, bodyweight routine that you do every morning can be a great option.

The important thing isn’t so much pushing your body to its limits, but warming the body up, getting blood flowing and wakeful hormones produced, and, of course, establishing a routine and habit of physical activity.

Try start with something which you can complete without any real strain or trouble, and in a short time frame. For example, you could do a set of pushups, a set of bodyweight squats, and a set of star jumps, one immediately after the other, perhaps with a few gentle yoga stretches to finish.

Commute by bicycle

Cycling rather than driving isn’t just a way of saving the planet, and it’s not just a way of sparing yourself some fuel costs, either. It’s also one of the easiest and most fulfilling ways of getting some exercise during the course of your normal day-to-day routine.

Studies have found that getting people to cycle to work, with no other changes at all, resulted in massively improved health outcomes, life expectancy, and overall fitness. It also ensures that you’ll arrive at the office each morning feeling energized and fresh, instead of stumbling through the door like a zombie and dragging your feet to the coffee machine before being able to do anything productive.

Commuting by bicycle also gives you more flexibility in your routine in general. It’s one thing having to park and collect a car, nevermind drive it into the city. A bicycle, on the other hand, is easily transported and dealt with in just about context.

Do something active at least once a weekend

A pretty common routine for people to settle into is to reach the end of working week, and completely give up on the idea of doing anything even a little bit strenuous until Monday. Under this system of extreme relaxation, the weekend gets spent on sitting around, maybe going to the pub, watching TV, and doing as little as possible.

It makes perfect sense that anyone would want to relax after a busy week at work, but there’s no reason why that relaxation has to be in the form of getting as little physical activity in as possible.

Simply committing to doing something physically active, that’s also fun, once a weekend can be a tremendous step in boosting your overall fitness, and in setting habits in place that will set you in good stead, concerning your overall health and wellbeing.

This could be anything from a long hike up a mountain, to playing Frisbee with your child or significant other in the park.

Sign up to classes or activities that will get you fit by accident

The idea of getting fit for fitness’ sake is a bit weird, when you think of it, and pretty recent in general. Sure, sure, ancient Greeks spent a lot of their time at the local gymnasiums working on getting sculpted abs and powerful torsos worthy of their own marble statues, but for most of the rest of human history, people were fit because it was necessary for some activity, not because they wanted to look good or live longer.

One of the best ways of getting fit, yourself, is to mirror this ancient approach. Instead of thinking about fitness in and of itself, think of physically demanding activities that you’d enjoy, and which would get you fit as a side-effect, and then sign up to some classes or groups involving those.

If you’ve also loved table tennis, for example, sign up for a local competition. Tennis? Find a partner and visit the local courts. Or perhaps you’ve always wanted to become a karate master? Well, there’s nothing stopping you from booking yourself in for an induction class.

Set “fitness triggers” around your home

When your goal is getting fit “by accident”, you want to rely as much as possible on making your fitness routine habitual and unconscious. One great way for doing this is to install “fitness triggers” all around your home, that remind you to perform a short burst of some physical activity.

One of the best examples of this would be to install a pull-up bar in the doorway leading to your kitchen and to set yourself the challenge of doing a certain number of pullups every time you enter the room.

The sky’s the limit as far as what triggers you can use. It’s all up to you.

Get a dog

Man’s best friend isn’t just a great social companion, he can also be a great personal trainer. All dogs need regular walks in order to be healthy and feel content and happy with their lives, and someone has to take them out for those walks. If you find it hard to motivate yourself to go out for walks, maybe you’ll feel differently if your furry companion is depending on you for its exercise.

If you’re really up for a fitness challenge, energetic, athletic dog breeds such as German Shepherds or Huskies will not only need regular walks but runs. Long ones.

How Can Pets Help Those With Mental Illnesses?

Pets are wonderful companions for anyone but have been shown to be particularly beneficial in older people as well as those with mental health issues. We have a special bond with our pets, and they can improve our lives in so many ways. Here are just a few of them.

They Encourage Socialising

Research has shown that walking a dog greatly increases your likelihood of having conversations with strangers, which can help owners to stay socially connected and less withdrawn. According to statistics, pet owners talk to more people, and this happens as they provide an excellent talking point. Since a large percentage of households own pets, they give us a common interest, and with their sweet and comical ways it gives us something to speak and laugh about. These days you can find dog walking groups, training and other activities online which could provide an opportunity to get out there and meet others. There are plenty of online forums too dedicated to your pet, so it’s a point of interest that you have which gives you the opportunity to connect with others.

They Provide Companionship

Pets give owners company, a sense of security and someone to share the routine of the day with. People with mental health issues or older adults living alone can feel isolated and lonely, having a pet there can definitely help with some of those feelings.

They Give Us Purpose

One of the issues with mental health difficulties is they can cause you to lack purpose. Mental illnesses like depression can make it difficult to get out of bed, look after yourself, eat and everything else. But when you have a pet which relies on you to be looked after, it can be the boost you need to get up and motivated. We have to feed them, take them to the vets, make sure they have the right worm and flea medication- brands like Pet Lock can be useful for this since it kills both fleas and ticks. We love our pets dearly that even when we don’t love ourselves or feel worthless, we can find the strength to get up and give them what they need.

They Are Mood and Health Boosting

Pets have a significant impact on both our health and our mood. Dogs mainly, since they have evolved to become acutely attuned to us as humans and the way we act. Research has shown some powerful findings, for example, dog owners are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets, and people with dogs have lower blood pressure in stressful situations than those without who don’t. Interestingly, pet owners even have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels, which in turn means that heart attack patients with dogs survive longer than those without. People who have pets, particular dogs will get more exercise due to walking them. But cleaning out a tank, vivarium or hutch can also count towards light exercise. Generally, pets provide a buffer against stress: simply having a pet close by has been shown to reduce our reaction to anxiety-provoking events

Luxury Living Room Ideas You’ll Love

The living room is the place where the whole family can sit and relax together. It is also the room you welcome guests into. You want it to make the right impression. Most of us decorate our living rooms more often than any other room in the house. We want it to look good, so there may even be seasonal updates to the decor throughout the year. Perhaps you spend more waking hours in this room than any of the others? Why not go for a luxury upgrade?

Start with the flooring. For a beautiful floor, it has to be hardwood. Oak has proven to be very popular because it lasts a lifetime and can be quite versatile. In fact, it is easier to match the rest of your wooden furniture to oak as there are so many choices. When it comes to flooring, there is no need for a high shine polish. Choose a light shade, and enjoy all the warmth of that amazing oak grain. Finally, add a plush rug in a strong, vibrant color. Why not pick an energetic pattern?

Your sofa and armchairs should be high quality if you’re looking for a luxury finish. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be comfortable! Pick a good quality manufacturer for your leather seating. It will last longer, and the colors will stay true. Be bold and daring with a green chesterfield sofa for this room. They sit easily in the space, and you can add other armchairs and seating without it looking out of place. The button work is gorgeous!

Window Dressing

Curtains, drapes, and voiles are all essential parts of any living room. Remember, they need to be functional as well as adding a touch of luxury to your decor. If you live in an area that becomes cold in the winter, then thermal lined drapes are a must! If you want a bit more privacy, then voiles are ideal. They also disperse the natural light beautifully into the room to make it softer and more comfortable. Color is really important here. You can choose to match the seating or go for something softer and more decorative.

Many people like the idea of a solid wood sideboard in the living room. It’s handy for storing all those games and magazines that can often clutter the room. Alternatively, why not place a large coffee table in the middle of the room? These often come with storage solutions that may be just enough for your. Finish the room with a storage footstool on casters so it can be moved into position whenever you fancy putting your feet up. Best of all, they too can hide away all those kids’ toys!

The living room is also where we gather to watch TV and movies. Choose a high-end high-resolution TV. Curved screens give the best view from any angle. The Surprises That Can Linger In Your New Fixer Upper

If you are excited by the thought of having purchased your new fixer upper, you probably can’t wait to get in there to start knocking down walls, reconfiguring the space for your modern lifestyle and beginning the renovations to your dream home. You bought a fixer upper because you wanted to put your own stamp on your property and not have to live with other people’s decor taste and interior design. However, the romantic notion of completing your own major renovation project might not be all it’s cracked up to be. Take a look at what nasty surprises may linger in between the four walls of your fixer upper and discover what you can do to dodge them effectively.

If you have bought a property that hasn’t been lived in for a while and is verging on being classified as derelict, there’s a strong chance that the pipework will not be quite up to scratch. Get a surveyor on board straight away and instruct him to carry out an in depth assessment of your new humble abode. He will be able to map out on a blueprint any structural areas of concern from pipework to electrical faults. He’ll be able to tell you the relevant professionals to call and give you a ballpark figure of how much it will cost to fix the issues. By doing this, you can get the relevant tradespeople in without delay.

Pests And Vermin

We’ve all seen the programs on television when intrepid pest controllers and local government officials tentatively set foot into old unused buildings to discover a whole host of bats or cockroaches or some other wild and feral beasts. You may pick up the keys to your new property and discover bed bugs, rats or some other infestation in your new home. Don’t worry, it will look much worse than it is. The best way to remedy the issue is to call in a wildlife removal firm to deal with the problem using relevant traps and fumigation techniques. They will have years of experience dealing with pest problems and will sanitize your home, post animal removal to leave your home hygienic and clean.

The dreaded damp often goes unnoticed until it rears its ugly head as a large piece of speckled black mold or a wet dog type of smell in a room. Although it can look severe, damp is usually relatively simple to fix. You may need to employ a professional to provide a new damp course in the walls of your property or assess the windows for any condensation issues. In the meantime, you can set up a dehumidifier in the house to try and draw the moisture from the walls keeping the atmosphere as dry as possible.

Buying a fixer upper can be one of the most satisfying experiences of your life. Starting out with nothing but a shell of a building and injecting life back into each and every room to create your dream home is the ultimate reward.

What To Do When The Family Home Becomes Worn And Tired

Family homes become worn out over time. It’s the natural progression of things. The kids run around, slam doors, and generally, make a mess, but parents play their part in wearing a house down too. You naturally build up your collection of possessions over time, and things in the house naturally begin to break. If you’re wondering what the remedy to your worn and tired house might be then here are some suggestions.

Consider moving out.

This is a solution for those who live in households that are beyond repair. Or, perhaps, you simply live in a household that is too small for the family. Maybe you do a great job of keeping it clean, but your children are outgrowing the small amount of space available. It might be time to look into moving out if this is the case. You could check out sites such as for moving companies that could help with the process if you’re not sure where you’d even begin when it comes to moving the possessions of your entire family to a brand new home. It can be a daunting change in your lives but a less daunting one than remaining in a house which no longer feels homely.

Fix each room.

There’s a chance that your home isn’t beyond repair, however. Maybe you’re not ready to move out because you’re adamant that there’s still life in the old dog yet. Simple wear and tear can be fixed if you have the time and dedication to do so. As suggested in one of our other articles, you should start by going through each room in the house and making a checklist of everything that needs to be fixed. You’ll also want to do this for the exterior of your property afterward, but let’s focus on the interior for now, as this is where you spend the majority of your time at home.

Once you’ve got a list of everything that needs to be fixed in your home, you’ll want to think about which tasks are DIY jobs and which of these might require a professional hand to help you out. You might find that, as you work on each room, the house starts to lift slightly. It might start to feel a little fresher, homely, and far less worn-out if you do some heavy renovation. Some things may need to be replaced, but some things may just need a lick of color; a fresh coat of white paint can instantly rejuvenate a room. Those tired-looking cupboards in the kitchen might look brand new once they’ve been repainted.

Improve your use of space.

Often, poor storage is what weighs heavily on a house. Endless clutter serves to ruin the overall aesthetic of even the most spacious and modern home. You might not need to move house or even fix endless aspects of the aesthetic around the house. As suggested over at, the problem may simply come down to a lack of storage space and too much clutter. Be a little more creative with the way you organize things in your house. You could decrease the number of utensils cluttering surfaces in the kitchen by putting up a new set of shelves on an empty patch of wall.

When the family home becomes worn and tired, look for the root cause of the problem before you jump to any drastic solutions. Sometimes, the problem may be easily solvable and doesn’t have to cost you a lot of money. Of course, in some cases, the family has become too big for the house and it may simply be time to move on.
