Pexels

Getting a new family dog is an exciting time for you and your loved ones. However, you may be a bit anxious if this is your first pet, or you’ve never had a dog roaming around the house before.

As the pet owner, it’s your responsibility that your dog is happy and healthy and well taken care of over the years. The following advice will help you achieve this goal and ensure that your household knows best practices when it comes to attending to your dog’s needs. Divvy up the responsibilities among your family members so you can all participate and share in the joys that a dog will bring you.

Focus on Feed Your Dog A Nutritious Diet

You can keep your dog healthy and happy by feeding it high-quality dog food. Invest in healthy kinds of dog food that contains fresh ingredients and is free of any harmful preservatives or fillers. Your pet will have more natural energy and will enjoy mealtime because of how delicious the food you’re serving tastes. Avoid feeding your dog human foods that can be dangerous to their health and find a wholesome dog food that they’ll love that will help them grow strong and live a long and active life.

Provide Them with A Designated Space in Your Home

You want to make sure your new dog feels safe and comfortable when entering your home. Therefore, designate a space in your home where they can spend time. Buy them a cozy bed they can lay in when they’re tired or want to rest that’s away from all the foot traffic and noise in your house. Also, place their food and water in an area that’s easy for them to access and where they can eat and drink as they please. Adequate shelter and clean, dry bedding will help to ensure that your new dog remains healthy and feels happy.

Find A Trusted Vet

Your new dog is going to need to visit the vet every so often. Find a trusted vet in the area that’s close to home, and you feel comfortable taking your dog to for checkups and other procedures. Read the online reviews and ask around for advice to help you decide where to go. Keep your dog healthy and happy by following your vet’s recommendations and making sure you stay up-to-date with their required shots, medicines, and vaccinations.

Make Time for Daily Play & Exercise

Another way you can keep your new dog healthy and happy is to make time for daily play and exercise with them. Dogs love to run around and play fetch or other games, so put in the effort to ensure that you set aside plenty of opportunities for your pet to burn off some energy. They’ll sleep better at night and will be able to maintain a healthy weight and heart when you commit to making sure they fit in their daily exercise. Having a pet to care for is also an excellent way for you to stay in shape and get outside to enjoy some fresh air.

Tips To Help Make Your Dog More Obedient

Having an obedient dog is very important because your dog is a member of the family and therefore needs to behave in a manner that isn’t going to make you look bad. If your dog is barking every time you have guests or has bad habits around the home, it’s definitely time to make a change. Here are some tips to help make your dog more obedient.

Establish House Rules

Firstly, you want to establish some house rules when it comes to keeping a dog. You might have had your dog for a while, so this might make things more difficult, but there’s also time to teach your dog how to behave when in the home. If you’re only just getting a dog for the first time, then you can easily implement the house rules so that they know from the beginning whose boss. You can start by making sure the dog stays in their bed, rather than to be coming into your room and wanting to come on your bed. If you’re allowing the dog to jump over sofas or having their food before you, it can make the dog feel as though they are superior to you and therefore higher up in the chain of command.

Give Them Dog Training

Dog training is something that is worth doing when they’re young because like children, they are more impressionable at that stage, and they’re also still learning. If you’re looking at dog training, make sure it’s somewhere nearby so that you can get to it very easily, and ideally, you don’t want a class that’s too overcrowded. This could limit the amount of attention you get when trying to teach your dog. At the same time, you want to try and limit the amount of dog training so that it’s not too stressful for the dog and they get used to following up the training at home.

Teach Your Dog Basic Commands & Tricks

Another thing work doing when your dog is young is to teach your dog basic commands and tricks. The reason why this is important is that it will help them learn better as they get older. That means that as they do grow up, you might want to teach them more tricks and they’ll likely find it easier to do than having had no lessons in commands or tricks at all. Commands are good to have in order to teach your dog certain things you’ll want them to do, such as getting into their bed or going out into the back yard to do their business!

Don’t Ignore Bad Behavior

Bad behavior shouldn’t be ignored. Not that it should be punished in any harmful way, but you should make it known through your tone of voice used, that they’re in trouble. It’s important that they understand who the boss is and that certain behavior isn’t acceptable. As a result, they will learn from their mistakes.

Making your dog more obedient is important, so use these tips to help make them more so.

Understand the conditions that your breed can be affected by

There are certain breeds of dog that are more prone to certain types of medical conditions. For instance, Bulldogs tend to have narrow nasal passages and Dalmatians commonly experience bladder stones. Make sure you understand your dog’s conditions, be they pre-existing or highly likely in the future so that you can deal with them as quickly as possible.

There are also general conditions that dogs face which you should understand. For instance, parasites and fleas are common issues that might affect your dog. Thankfully, products such as Nexgard Spectra can easily help your dog recover, but you need to put some research into it so that you know which product to buy, how to use it and when to use it. Once you learn more about the problems your dog could experience and their solutions, it’ll give you a lot more peace of mind.

Before you invite a dog into your family, make sure your home is dog-friendly

It sounds obvious to say this, but our homes are designed for humans–not dogs. It’s important to make small changes to your home so that your dog feels safer and more comfortable in your home, such as buying them a comfortable bed that they can claim as their private little space.

Luckily, there are a plethora of ways to make your home more dog-friendly. For instance, you should try and keep any fragile or important items away from your dog’s reach. This means placing rare or sentimental items behind cases or back in your storage drawers to prevent them from being damaged. You’ll also want to invest in a vacuum cleaner that can pick up pet hairs, especially if your breed is known to shed a lot of hair. Hiding or minimizing the appearance of electrical cables can also ensure that your dog doesn’t chew through electrical cables.

Having a dog is a long-term investment that you can’t neglect. We hope that these beginner-friendly tips have given you a better idea of how you can show compassion and love to your canine friend, or maybe it’s helped encourage you to consider adopting a dog in the future.

How to Find the Right Diet for Your Dog

Your dog should have a healthy diet, just like you do. The food that they eat should give them energy, make their skin healthy and coat glossy, and help them to maintain the right weight. Finding the right diet for your dog isn’t always easy. All dogs are different and have different needs, and there are lots of pet food products out there. Here are some key things to think about.

Know Your Dog

Firstly, understanding your dog will help you to find the right diet. Your dog’s age, breed, sex, and activity levels can all influence the diet that they need. If they have any medical conditions, this can also affect the food that they should be eating. When you know your dog, you’re in a better position to choose their diet.

Speak to Your Vet

Your vet can always help you when you have questions about how to care for your dog. They can discuss what dietary options are available and help you to explore which one might be the best option for your four-legged friend. If you’re thinking about a radical change to your dog’s diet, speak to your vet about it first.

Get to Know Different Ingredients

There are all sorts of ingredients that can go into dog food from different food groups and of different qualities too. It’s a good idea to get to know the ingredients you might find in dog food, from meat and other proteins to vegetables, grains, and more. It’s also a good idea to know what your dog shouldn’t have.

4 Reasons Small Canines Are The Dogs!

Pexels – CC0 Licence

Bigger seems to better in today’s society. Whether it’s jumbo TV screens or supersize meals at fast-food joints, everyone prefers more bang for their buck. You might think the same applies when owning a pet, yet it isn’t the case. Small dogs, although little in stature, pack a punch that is impossible to forget once you have one. No, it isn’t just their adorable face and the fact they are incredibly cuddly!

Small pooches bring a lot more to the table, stuff you’ll love after you experience it for the first time. So, carry on reading to find out why a small canine is the dogs. There’s even a phrase named after them; that’s how incredible they are!

They’re Healthier

Now, it isn’t a rule that small dogs are healthier and live longer than big canines. However, it does tend to hold true for the most part, and it’s not hard to see why. With less weight to carry and fewer health issues as a result, they won’t have to go to the vets every couple of months. Even breeds that are notoriously unhealthy can beat the odds if they are small, such as bulldogs. Bred to have a greater stature, a Royal Frenchel is more agile and can breathe more efficiently. As a result, one can live for up to 20 years, which is a lifetime for a bulldog.

Less Needy

Like all dogs, they need love and attention, but they aren’t the features that annoy pet owners. The stuff you don’t enjoy is going out for an hour walk in the dead of winter or fall when it’s freezing and the rain is pouring down. The excellent news is that a small dog doesn’t need the same level of exercise because its body isn’t as big. So, spending all night in the rain can be a thing of the past. That leaves more time on the sofa cuddling with your best friend!

Easy To Move

Sometimes pets need to come with you on a road trip or vacation. After all, it might not be feasible to pay for a kennel or to ask a loved one to take care of them for two weeks. For big dog owners, this is a pain as there is never enough room for them in the car or on the plane. Small canine owners don’t blink an eye because little dogs fit into the trunk perfectly. Plus, they don’t require as much food or water, or stops for a walk, meaning you’ll get to your destination quicker without any ‘accidents.’

They’re Cheaper

Why? It’s because they don’t need as many essentials or accessories. A small dog, such as a terrier, won’t eat as much as a Boxer or Great Dane. Let’s face it – dog food isn’t cheap! Also, there’s grooming to consider. Whether it’s lotions or ointments, a small tube will suffice for a little dog, saving you a considerable sum in the long run.

Considering dogs live for decades, who wouldn’t want to cut costs?!

Taking Care Of Your Dog When You Go On Holiday

Source

It’s a great thing to have a dog. Not only are they incredible company and very loving, but they are also just a great being to have around you all the time. Of course, just because it is lovely to have a dog doesn’t mean that it is easy all the time, and there are some respects in which it can cause you a little trouble in your daily life. One example of where this can be the case is when you go on holiday, and have to leave your little friend behind. Having a dog means, for most people, not going on as many trips as before. But if you still want to make sure that you are going to be able to have a holiday, then you will need to find something to do with your dog to make sure they are being looked after, as their wellbeing is paramount. Let’s take a look at some of the best options you have here.

Leave Them With A Friend

If you have a particularly good friend who you know would be happy to look after them, then that is generally the best option and the one you should probably go for. But make sure that you are genuinely not putting anyone out – the last thing you want is for your friend to really not be happy about having to do it, so make sure that they are okay with it. It helps if they happen to be a true dog lover, of course, and that should help to inform your decision about which friends to ask in the first place. Leaving them with a friend means that you can relax and enjoy your holiday, knowing full well that they are being looked after perfectly well.

Go To The Professionals

Of course, you might instead decide that you want to go to a professional to look after your dog while you are away. This certainly has its distinct benefits. For one, you can make sure that you are actually going to get updated, as many professional dog walkers and sitters keep you regularly updated as a matter of course, which a friend might not do so readily. You can also expect that they will be fed and walked the proper amount, as a professional is going to know exactly how much they need both. Clearly, this is a good way to go which results in you knowing that your dog is looked after, and which is certainly worth the money.

Ask A Neighbour

Finally, if you happen to have a particularly trustworthy neighbor, then that could be a possible way to have your dog looked after. You might even ask them to simply house sit for you, which can be nice for the pooch as it means they don’t have to go and get used to another home. But do make sure that you choose a neighbor that you definitely feel you can trust, otherwise you might end up regretting it!

Messy Mutt: Keeping Life Clean When You Adopt A Dog

There are many dog lovers in the world who are stuck with a conundrum. When you don’t have an animal like this and have worked extremely hard to build your home into something which reflects your personality, the idea of inviting their chaos can seem like a crazy one. Before you even start to think about the waste they leave behind, creatures like this aren’t exactly careful. Of course, though, this doesn’t have to stop you from having a pet like this; it just means you need to make some changes to your lifestyle to suit one. To help you out with this, this post will be exploring some of the best methods to live with a dog without letting your home fall into ruin.

Clear Pathways

Unlike humans, dogs don’t understand the value or fragility of certain items around the home. Plates, vases, and other brittle objects are found everywhere in your home, and they are very easy to knock from their resting places when a large animal is barreling through the place. This won’t be such a problem if you’re going to have a small dog, as they won’t have the same damage potential as something larger, but it will always be worth considering.

Solving this is a simple matter of clearing the way. Low furniture like coffee tables, sideboards, and drawers should have their surfaces kept free from items which could be broken by your dog. Of course, your dog shouldn’t be running around indoors. If they seem to be very restless when they are indoors, it could be worth giving them a little more exercise, a few things are more destructive than a puppy with too much juice. As they get older, it should get easier to avoid having things break around your dog.

Tidying Up

Going back to their inability to understand the importance of some objects, most dogs will also struggle to know what does and doesn’t belong to them. This means that items which are left around your home could be easy pickings for your pet, and some have the potential to cause a real mess. For example, if your dog gets its teeth around a loo roll, you could come home to a place which is covered in tiny fragments of paper. This will take a long time to clean but is also completely avoidable if you keep your dog under control.

Along with tidying your home, it will also be important to think about tidying your dog. When they’ve had the chance to spend an afternoon outdoors, they will probably come home with a good deal of dirt in their fur. In some cases, if they have access to water, they could even be muddy, and this is very hard to clean from the inside of your home. A hose, towel, and bottle of dog shampoo can be enough to solve this issue, giving you the ability to clean your dog on the doorstep, rather than having to take them inside.

Training Them

Unlike a cat, your dog will be a natural team player. With their early ancestors being pack animals, modern dogs still hold a lot of their social skills, and this is part of what makes them such great companions for humans. Along with this, though, it also provides you with the opportunity to give them some training. For the best results with something like this, it’s always worth starting as early as possible, as time will be a valuable resource when it comes to getting things right. Below, you can find some examples of the areas your dog will need to be trained in.

Toilet Manners: One of the biggest fears which new dog owners have is that their furry friend will leave waste around their home. While this is a risk with any animal, dogs are one of the easiest species to train out of this sort of behaviour. As a puppy, they may need female or male dog wraps to ensure that they don’t make any accidental messes. If they do leave something behind which they shouldn’t have, punishing them is a bad idea, with a stern word or two often being enough to let them know that they can do better.

A lot of people will use their garden for this process, simply moving their furry friend outside when it looks like they need to go to the toilet. You can help this process along by placing some of their waste outside, while also keeping it clean to ensure that they always have somewhere to go. As time goes on, accidents will become rarer and rarer, until it is only you who can cause something like this to happen.

Obedience: There are few things harder to manage than a disobedient dog. Trying to keep them safe, out of fights, and in the good books of those around you will be hard when they are very young, as most puppies will simply act how they please. With stern words and rewards for good behaviour, though, you can often take control of this area. Fear and pain should never be tools in this sort of effort, with most dogs growing to hate their owners when they are subjected to physical punishments for minor transgressions. Remember; they won’t understand why something isn’t allowed.

Emotions: Much like the people who own them, dogs are always very emotional animals. Wagging tails, forward facing ears, and growling are all signs of strong emotions, but some puppies will struggle to control the way they feel. Thankfully, soothing an animal like this is much the same as making a baby feel better, with remaining calm and supportive being the best approach to take. Getting angry with an excited dog isn’t fair, as they will usually only be trying to communicate with you.

Training your pet isn’t always the easiest job, with most people never having gone through this process before. Of course, while it might be hard, it is well worth it to ensure that your home doesn’t get impacted by the animal you’ve decided to look after. If you need extra help with this, there are loads of companies out there which offer specialist dog training. It might cost a little bit of money, but going through a process like this will always result in a more obedient dog, and this can be well worth the money.

Cleaning Things Up

Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try, there will always be a certain amount of mess which comes with your puppy. Like any animal, these creatures aren’t able to control a lot of the things they leave behind, and this means that you have to be active in your approach to cleaning them up. Below, you can find some examples of the common areas in the home which will need the most attention, giving you the chance to start thinking about it before you take the plunge with your puppy.

Furry Furniture: Most dogs will have a summer and a winter coat. When the warmer months roll around, they won’t need their thicker fur anymore and will shed it all off over the course of a few weeks. This often results in furniture being covered with the stuff. To overcome this sort of mess, you will need to do two different jobs; brushing the dog, and rolling the furniture. Both brushes and lint rollers can be found all over the web, and won’t cost much to get your hands on.

Dirty Floors: Whether it’s footprints or food, your dog will leave a lot of waste behind when they move around your home. Vacuuming the areas which they spend the most time in each day can be a great way to keep this under control, though some people prefer to take a more modern approach. Devices like the Roomba are able to clean the floor space on a whole level of a building without the help of a human. They might scare the dog at first, but will be worth it to keep the mess under control.

The Garden: In most cases, dogs will spend most of their toilet time in the garden. This saves you from having to collect waste while out and about, while also making it easier for them to avoid having accidents. Of course, though, you can’t have poo piling up in your garden for months on end and need to work on this part of your home very regularly to keep it clean. There are few things worse than treading something like this into a carpet, making it worth keeping the garden clear.

With all of this in mind, you should be ready to start living a clean life with your puppy. A lot of homeowners fear the idea of an animal like this, worrying that their hard work will be destroyed when they welcome their furry friend. In reality, though, as long as you’re willing to work at it, it’s far from impossible to have a nice place and a puppy at the same time.

3 Things Your Dog Would Want You To Know

Have you ever wished your dog could talk?

Those times when he barks constantly, and you have no idea why. The times when he looks at you with pleading eyes, but you really don’t know what it is he is after. If he had the capacity to speak, he would be able to communicate to you his feelings and desires. But unfortunately, he doesn’t have those words to offer you.

But if your dog could talk, these are just some of the things we imagine he would probably want you to know.

1: “I don’t misbehave to annoy you.”

(image)

How many times have you rebuked your dog for misbehaving? How many times have you taken it personally? As dog owners, we often ask ourselves why our dogs can misbehave so badly, despite our best efforts to care for them. Shouldn’t they be more grateful? And shouldn’t they show gratitude through good behavior?

Here’s the thing. Quite often, dogs misbehave for a number of reasons, none of them out of malice or revenge for you. When dogs are left alone for a long time, they can become anxious and have toileting accidents. When dogs are bored, they can start to entertain themselves by chewing on such things as your slippers. As the dog owner, you can alleviate such instances. You might ask a neighbor to pop in to keep your dog company, for example. And you might spend more time playing with your dog, instead of neglecting them while you watch the television. There are all kinds of causes and solutions to doggy misbehavior, some of which you can deal with yourself, and some of which might require the assistance of a training specialist if things get out of hand. So, don’t take your dog’s misbehavior personally, even if he does always target your slippers.

  1. “I am head over paws in love with you.”

(image)

Have you ever woken up in the morning, only to be greeted with a slurping kiss and bad breath? Have you ever come home from work, only to be welcomed by your dog with an excited bark and an outstretched paw? Our tendency is to push our dogs away with irritation and annoyance, but the truth is this: your dog does it because he loves you!

Dogs crave human interaction. When they greet you unceremoniously, or when they look up at you with puppy-dog eyes, its because they want to be with you. Your dog is your best friend, whether you like it or not. Therefore, return that friendship. Give them the attention they crave with a kiss and a cuddle. Play fetch with them in the park. Take them on long walks. Your dog’s love for you is unconditional, despite those moments when you have lost patience because of another chewed-up slipper. So, the least you can do is return the favor and show your dog some love in return.

  1. “I will eat anything.”

(image)

Chances are, when your dog is barking or looking up at you with pleading eyes, he probably wants to feed again. Dogs love food, and other than your company, having something to eat is something guaranteed to get them out of bed in the morning. And even after you have fed your dog, he will probably be on the hunt for more food. That leftover sausage on your plate? Your dog will deal with that faster than you can say “I was saving that for later.”

Dogs will eat anything, from the food you put out for them, to anything else that takes their fancy – even their own poop! As a dog owner, you need to be alert to this. You need to be mindful of the food you give them, only giving them the correct portions for their breed and size. You need to avoid giving them human food, some of which could be deadly. And you need to care for your dog’s dental needs, such as brushing their teeth to remove any food that could cause gum disease and giving them breathe spray to neutralize growing bacteria and stinking dog breath. Your dog won’t have the know-how to eat a healthy diet, and they don’t have the skills to care for their digestion and teeth properly, so you need to be there for them. Manage their diet, take them to the vet for a dental checkup, and go easy on the treats!

Final word

If your dog could talk, we are sure they would communicate the above to you. But as they don’t talk, you can still get an idea of what is they want by their actions. That chewed slipper will let you know they are bored. That sloppy kiss will let you know your dog loves you. And chances are, those frustrated barks and begging paws are probably signs that yes, your dog wants to feed again! Perhaps it is easier to know what your dogs want than you thought!

How to Keep Your Home Clean With Dogs

It can seem like a never-ending battle when you have dogs and you like to keep a clean house. Endless amounts of hair can be found under the sofas and in the rugs. Dirty paw prints are traipsed all through the floors and that wet dog smell just won’t go away. You love them like your children but you wish there was a way of keeping everything clean while letting them enjoy themselves. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Flickr

Groom Your Dog

All dogs moult. It varies how much dogs of different breeds moult but even if you have a short haired dog, you’ll still find hair everywhere. To stop your dogs from shedding all over your furniture, it’s important to brush them at least 3 times a week; more if your dog has long hair. The more hair on your dog, the more can fall off, so make sure your dog’s hair is cut by a professional groomer on a regular basis. It’s not just to save your furniture. Your dog will need to be cut to stay cool during the warmer months.

Install an Outside Tap

Most of our dogs go to the toilet in our gardens at least three times a day. During the Summer months, if the garden isn’t cleaned properly, the smell can intensify. The last thing you want is a waft of something nasty every time you open the back door. Consider installing an outside tap by contacting your local plumbers. The job takes less than an hour usually, and it doesn’t cost much. You can then attach a hose pipe to the tap and you’ve got a way of quickly getting rid of the smell. You can also pick up pet friendly disinfectants at local pet stores.

Pet Vacuum

When you need to replace your vacuum, it’s worth investing in a vacuum designed for cleaning pet mess. Not only will it be easier to remove hair from furniture and carpets, the sharp suction also allows you to clean up dirty paw prints when your dog has been on a wet or muddy walk. Of course, it’s important to clean your dog’s paws before they enter the main house, but you can never guarantee you’ll get every piece of dirt off them.

Go for Walks

Exercising your dog is more important than you may think when it comes to keeping your house clean. This is especially important for younger dogs because it ensures their energy is lowered and they’ll have less interest in being destructive. So, if you a cushion you’re particularly fond of, make sure your dog is stimulated both physically and mentally. When a dog is tired, it’s more likely to obey your commands than get into mischief. So, if you tell your dog to wait at the door while you get a towel to dry it’s fur off, it will be more inclined to please you and obey.

It may be hard keeping up with mucky pups but the loyalty and companionship you receive in return makes it all worth it.

Growing up close to my grandparents was amazing. I was so fortunate to have had them right down the road. Now that I am grown, I feel like I appreciate them more. We lost our grandmother a few years ago and if it wasn’t for Bella, my grandfather’s black lab mix, my grandfather probably wouldn’t have dealt with her loss as good as he did. They were married for a long time.

Recently we lost Bella to old age, this has been really hard on my grandfather. When I stop by to visit, some days he will ask me to let Bella out. Some days he will talk about missing her so much. We are moving him soon to a retirement villa where we can keep a better eye out on him so getting another dog is just not an option.

I was so relieved and excited to have found the Hasbro’s Joy for All Puppy. I took it to my grandfather and he was so happy he cried. It made me feel good knowing that he has a purpose again. Therefore he will continue to live a happier life. The puppy is so much like a real dog that he kept saying I hope they let me keep him at my new home. I wasn’t sure if he realized it wasn’t a real dog. He talked to it and was holding it and petting it. I love the fact I don’t have to worry about him forgetting to take the dog potty or feeding him.

I love knowing this dog will be around a long time because Hasbro has a long tradition of creating the world’s best play experiences, and the Joy For All brand represents an extension of that tradition, striving to bring happiness and fun to aging loved ones and their families. They are amazing at not only make toys that last but making items that even my grandfather can play with.

I taught him how to mute the dog for night time, and how to turn him on and off. This is a perfect companion for those aging love ones that don’t really need the responsibility of a pet, but long for one. He started calling him Buddy, saying he is my bud now. Of course, he calls me my sister’s names but he can remember his new companions name.

You can talk to the dog and it will respond so you feel as though it is real, especially with its soft fur! The batteries are already included and can be used right out of the box. Of course, we have always been a dog family but they have the cutest Cat Companion also just in case your loved one prefers a cat!

Chili Dog Mix – Texas Pete Hot Sauce

14044902_10154003832773155_1994739785_o

I am in charge of the chili for our tailgating party so each year I work on a new twist to my recipe to make that perfect chili for our hot dogs. I love trying different products to make the perfect chili, and since I do not like heart burn, I have found that making it from scratch is my best method and the one that gets the most raves. Of course my secret is the Texas Pete Hot Sauce. Without it my recipe is bland but the minute I add it everyone comments on how awesome it is.

14060324_10154003832873155_1972012634_o

Here is my secret recipe to making the best tailgating chili ever…

2 pounds of hamburger meat sauteed with onion a little garlic salt, salt and pepper. (Cook until fully cooked then drain grease).

1 Can Tomato paste, about 4 to 5 tomatoes, I love using fresh chopped up.

Chili powder to taste, more salt and pepper.

I used dried kidney beans, soak for one hour, boil for one hour drain and then add to sauce. (they need to cook about 90 minutes to be fully cooked).

Add about 10 drops of Texas Pete’s Hot Sauce.

Stir and let cook on low for about two hours. I usually add about 5 – 10 more drops of Texas Pete before serving. This gives it the best flavor.

14060497_10154003832923155_908290845_o

We use Texas Pete’s Hot Sauce on just about everything from grilled oysters to Bloody Mary’s. This flavor is good with everything! If you are looking for something not too hot with a good flavor that everyone will enjoy then you need to try it!

Texas Pete

We also like to use it on wings, soak the wings in the Texas Pete overnight and then grill them with a little salt and they are a hit especially at our tailgates.

Top 5 Tips For Your Next BBQ

Summer is basically upon us, which means it’s BBQ season. As soon as the sun is hot enough for us to stay outside without shivering, that’s when the BBQ gets fired up. Bearing that in mind, here are some top tips to make your next barbecue one people will remember forever. A small caveat – these tips focus more on the cooking side of things, rather than hosting or entertainment!

Tip 1: Use fresh ingredients

In general, this should be a tip for everyday cooking! Fresh ingredients are packed full of more flavor and less bad stuff. But, it’s particularly important for a BBQ, particularly if you’re cooking meat. Go to the local butches and get all of your ingredients from there. Find a farmer’s market and get fresh produce to make your salads and accompaniments. With this simple tip you have instantly given your food more flavor!

Tip 2: Variety

Burgers and hot dogs are two quintessential BBQ items. Still, they can get boring after a time. Instead, offer up some variety. Get chicken on there, maybe some pork, possibly even fish! Be sure there are vegetarian options as well, just in case someone at the BBQ doesn’t eat meat. Speaking of which, loads of vegetables are amazing when grilled on a barbecue. Corn tastes fantastic, so don’t be afraid to grill some veg for extra variety. This tops your BBQ from being boring and adds new flavors to the party.

Tip 3: Season your food

Some of you will look at this point with a confused expression. Surely everyone seasons their food? Well, you’re wrong. Too many people will get their food and just slap it on the BBQ, relying on the classic charring to provide all the flavor. In reality, you need to add some type of spice rub or a marinade that imparts more deliciousness on your food – particularly your meat. Check out the video above for a BBQ chicken marinade that takes your food to the next level.

Tip 4: Don’t forget the drinks

You’re so caught up in grilling that you forget about drinks! Now, you could buy some from the store, but where’s the fun in that? Spend some extra time making your own lemonade or other fruity and flavorsome drinks. If you wanted to go down the alcoholic route, there’s a great recipe on Giadzy for a blood orange shandy. It’s Italian-inspired, bringing a nice blend of sweet, sour, and fruitiness to the party. Ideally, use drinks that pair well with your BBQ food to enhance the flavors.

Tip 5: Be patient

Don’t be too impatient when grilling your food. Let it sit there for a while on each side to really get the charred marks. You’re not burning it, you’re adding flavor! The worst thing to do is to keep turning your food so there are no char lines at all. It defeats the purpose of a BBQ! Be patient, let it char.

There you have it; my top five tips for your next barbecue. Whether you’re grilling for your family or a larger group, keep these tips in mind for the best experience possible.

Can You Deal With These Common Household Issues?

Source

Your home should be the most comfortable and safe place in the world. But that doesn’t mean that things are always going to be perfect. After all, life is filled with it’s ups and downs, and you’ve got to be ready to deal with problems when they appear. To help you make sure that you’re never left in any sticky situations, here are a few of the most common household problems, and you can deal with them.

Damp

This is one of the things that you should always be on the lookout for, especially if you live in an older property. Damp doesn’t need to always be a cause for alarm, but it’s definitely not something that you should ignore. It might start out as not that much of a problem, but if allow to carry on then it could well end up turning into the cause of a serious disaster. Damp can end up doing serious structural damage to your home, so it’s incredibly important that you call in a professional at the very first signs.

Infestation

There are few things that can make your skin crawl like the idea that your home is being invaded by an infestation of pests. Sadly, this kind of thing is far more common than you might think. The upside of that, however, is that getting rid of pests is actually a lot easier than you might think. There are plenty of methods out there for getting rid of pests, whether it’s through rat traps or something more serious like fumigation for bugs if you’ve got a really serious problem. Of course, if it’s not quite that bad there are plenty of things that you can do to get rid of bugs and keep them out permanently.

Drains

Now, before you panic and call a plumber, there are actually a lot of things that you might be able to do yourself that are very effective and are pretty likely to save you money. Unless the clog is really serious, getting rid of it is actually a pretty simple prospect. By disconnecting the drain line and fishing out the clog with a metal wire bent into a little hook, you should be able to sort the whole thing out yourself. Of course, if it does turn out that your clog is a little bit more complicated than that, then it might, in fact, be time to call in a professional to deal with it. After all, you don’t want to end up spending days trying to deal with something that a plumber can fix in a few minutes.

Now, in an ideal world, you won’t have to deal with all of these problems (and if you’re really lucky then you won’t have to deal with any of them!) but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. After all, it’s definitely a more enviable position to have a bit of extra knowledge that you’ll never use than to be left in a bad situation with no idea what to do!

Preparing Your Home For Sale

When you are preparing your home to be sold, there is a range of things that you should consider. Of course, we all know about the de-cluttering, cleaning, and a fresh lick of paint ahead of arranging your professional home buyers. But there is more to it than just that.

There are a number of things that people forget in the build-up to having potential buyers view the property.

So, when preparing your home for sale, remember these key elements.

Smells

Each home will have a particular smell. But as you live there, you are unlikely to notice it at all. Many people quickly stock up on scented candles, plugins, and a range of baked goods scented reed diffuses.

The problem is, this isn’t neutralizing the smells, it is adding an extra layer on top.

Buyers don’t want to be overwhelmed with a strong vanilla scent, or the dog bed.

A key way to help minimize any scents is to keep any pet beds washed even more than usual, put trainers and gym bags somewhere safely. A box with a lid can usually do the trick.

A lemon-scented deodorizing air freshener in each room can help your home smell fresher.

Before you have any views, keep the windows open for around 30 minutes, and in the days leading up to viewings, it is a good idea to do this too.

Try not to cook any meals that have a strong odor – like baked fish.

Appliances

If you have any appliances that came with your home, you should take some time to look out all the warranty information. Put it in a safe place like the kitchen drawer. They will be easy to hand over this way.

Cracks and Bumps

If you have cracks in the garden paving or on the driveway, you will do well to have them repaired. Not only are they an eyesore, but they can pose a potential threat to would-be buyers. If they aren’t too deep, then you can fix most cracks yourself; if they are on a larger size, then it is better to hire a company to get them fixed.

External

The entryway for your home should be depersonalized – like the rest of the home. ‘Welcome to the Jones’ signs, hand prints, painted stones. They are cute, but they do signal that your home is yours. There should be room for people to picture themselves living there.

Closets

Buyers will take a really good look at your home. And any built-in closet or cupboards are going to be subject to some exploration. So it is a good time to make sure that everything is well organized, clothes are neatly hung up, and if there is anything you’d rather keep hidden, then store them in a different place and perhaps in a locked box.

As you clean and tidy, think about the things that you look at as you walk around a home that you are thinking about buying. It is all in the details.

Self-Care Yourself to Better Health

Taking care of your mind, body and soul is the best way to achieve better health now and in the future. That’s why taking self-care seriously is so important for us all.

Not sure where to start with self-care? Check out the health-boosting practices below…

See the doctor when you need to

So many people neglect their health because they are too embarrassed to see the doctor, but whether you’re struggling to know whether you have genital warts vs herpes, you’re worried about a lump in an intimate area, or you’re experiencing mental health issues and you’re worried about the stigma, you need to bite the bullet and put your health first. Nothing else you can do in terms of self-care is going to help you as much as seeking the appropriate help of a trained medical professional.

Take sleep more seriously

If you’re the kind of person who’d rather stay up binging boxsets on Netflix than get your 8 hours of shut-eye every night, one of the best things you can do for your health right now is to take sleep more seriously.

A lack of sleep can make you stressed, depressed, overweight and more prone to serious illnesses such as heart disease and stroke! To avoid this, and to start feeling your best, set a sensible bedtime (and wake up time) and stick to it. If you struggle to get to sleep, spritz your pillow with lavender, drink a soothing cup of chamomile and take a hot bath and you’ll soon find yourself drifting off.

Improve your gut health

Gut health is about more than just your belly — it can lead to depression, lack of vitality and many other poor health issues. So, if you’re serious about caring for yourself and boosting your health, start feeding your gut a healthy diet that’s high in vitamins, minerals, and good bacteria, and low in processed junk foods, right now.

Meditate

Meditation is an excellent tool for anyone who is feeling mentally frazzled. A simple mindfulness practice can help you to slow down your thoughts, calm your mind and live in the moment, which means you’re less likely to ruminate on negative thoughts, and more likely to feel peace, happiness and maybe even a spiritual connection if that’s your thing.

Spend more time in nature

One of the most beneficial things you can do for your mind, body, and soul is to spend more time in nature. Why? Because scientific studies have found that nature can reduce stress levels, boost vitamin D levels, reduce inflammation, increase happiness levels and boost the immune system among other things. It can also make you feel more connected with the world and everything in it, which is a great way to feel better about your place in the world too.

Say No more often

So many of us are so busy that we never get any time to just relax and take care of ourselves. That’s why we should all be learning how to say no more often. What should we be saying no to? Anything that we don’t really want to do that causes us more stress and anxiety than we need without benefiting us in any way. Start saying no and free up more time for the self-care that you need to be fitter, healthier and happier — you won’t regret it.

Consider getting a pet

Pets are amazing. Not only are they great company, and oh so cute, but they can actually improve your health and well being too. Dogs, in particular, have been proven to reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and ease the symptoms of various mental health issues. They also encourage you to get outside and get some fresh air, which can be a big help to your health too.

Exercise daily

Exercising each day might seem undoable if you have a lot on your plate, but actually it will give you more time back because it will not only improve your physical and mental health, but it will increase your energy levels and boost your motivation so that you can get more done without it feeling so tough. It’ll also help to extend your life and you’ll be able to get over any mild illne4sses far more easily when you’re fit and healthy too.

Taking self-care seriously isn’t an indulgence — it’s something that you must do if you want to achieve better health now and in the future. So, don’t be afraid to take more time for yourself and do whatever you need to do to feel well.

Where Should You Go for Advice About Your Pet’s Health?

Image from Pexels – CC0 License

Having a pet in the family is a joy, but it’s also a responsibility. You need to take care of your pet and provide them with the best care possible if you want to keep them happy and healthy. Whether you have a cat, dog, bird, rabbit or perhaps something more exotic, it’s important to know how to care for your pet day-to-day, as well as what to do when you think that they might be ill. Knowing where to get advice to help you care for your pet and treat any illnesses or injuries will help you to look after them in the best way possible.

Talk to Your Vet

When you need advice about caring for your pet, your first port of call might be your own vet. The vet you use is hopefully someone who you can trust to give you advice when you need it. You don’t need to wait for your pet to be ill to ask for advice. You can also ask them for any tips they may have during routine checkups, or some veterinary surgeries might allow you to phone them and ask questions if necessary. Many vets also have useful resources on their website or in the form of brochures and other materials.

Get Advice from Other Vets

When your vet isn’t available, or you don’t want to bother them, there are plenty of other places to get advice. Other vets are available, of course, and plenty of them provide advice online and in other ways. Vets like Jennifer Perusek have blogs offering useful articles on a range of animal care issues. Just be sure to check the vet’s credentials so that you know they’re qualified to offer advice. You can even find some online “ask a vet” services that will allow you to ask any questions that you might have.

Use Animal Charities and Nonprofits

Another useful resource can be charities and nonprofits that help animals. These organizations usually have vets and other animal experts on their teams. They can provide advice in person, online or over the phone when you need help. For example, some animal shelters might offer information about caring for your pets. One example is The Humane Society, which has a website with plenty of resources. You can also find organizations for specific species or even different breeds of animals to help you discover the right advice.

Image from Pexels – Pexels License

Consider Behavioral and Other Experts

Your vet might know how to care for your dog’s coat or what vaccinations your cat needs, but what do they know about animal behavior? While they likely have some fundamental knowledge, they’re probably not an expert in the behavior of all types of animals. When you need help with training or other behavioral issues, you may find that it’s helpful to seek out a behavioral expert or animal trainer who can offer you the right advice. They can often work with you and your pet.

When you need advice about your pet’s health, seek out experts who know what they’re doing. Make sure you don’t take advice from just anyone.

How Can You Help Those In Need?

https://unsplash.com/photos/UOwvwZ9Dy6w

Everyone has those moments where they need some assistance. Sometimes, it’s as simple as lending a hand to move some furniture around. Others, it’s more serious, with emotional turmoil making every day a struggle. As a friend, you want to be there no matter the severity, but it can often be challenging to help someone struggling with emotional pain. You don’t know what is too much or too little, and while you want to be there, you might feel your words are not doing what you intend.

Don’t Talk, Just Listen

When someone is in need, you often feel the need to talk to them and answer everything they say. However, sometimes people just want to vent. They don’t want you to solve their problems. They want you to know what they are going through. They need you to know the facts.

Most of the time, all you need to do is be there with them and listen. You only need to respond if they ask for you to do so. It’s natural to feel like you’re having a conversation, but you shouldn’t force yourself to say something, especially if you don’t know what to say, anyway.

Little Gestures

Every day can be a struggle for people struggling with issues ranging from anxiety to depression burnout, so consider offering a helping hand with little gestures. They7 may not seem like much, but something as simple as picking dinner up from the store on your way over or talking the dog for a walk will help immeasurably.

It can feel like a lot of pressure to do things when someone is not feeling themselves, so knowing they have a reliable support network around them can ease this pressure and give them one less thing to think about.

Give Them Space

You need to understand that everyone needs space, so while it’s good to be there for them, it’s equally important to leave them to themselves when they need it.

Everyone is different, so while some people need the company of friends to help them cope, others will require the opposite. There is no right way to deal with problems, but there is a right way to respect someone’s wishes, so if they want to be alone, you must give them space.

Gently Suggest Other Treatment Methods

You can’t go in all guns blazing and tell your friend or relative that this is what they should do. Still, if you can tell they are suffering from specific issues, you can gently encourage or suggest other treatment methods, especially if they have not explored any yet.

Places such as the Renaissance Recovery Center are ideal for substance abuse issues, whereas general counseling can help people overcome a range of mental health issues. However, they need to want to get better, and this can often be the most challenging battle of all.

A Friend in Need

As a friend or relative, you want to be there no matter what. With these ideas, you can provide support for those in need, both close by and from afar. Hopefully, they will take your assistance on board and start their journey towards getting better.

Boost your Self-Confidence

Not all of us can be the star of the show all the time. Some of us like to take a back seat and allow others to hold the limelight. However, have you thought about your motivation behind this mindset? Do you lack confidence? Do you find that you sometimes really want to say something, but always hold it back? Life is not easy at times. Many of us have really busy lives, and we are constantly juggling a thousand things at once. Perhaps, you don’t want the limelight because you are unhappy with something. A few extra pounds, for example. It is perfectly natural to feel as if you just want to hide sometimes, but that should not be how you live every moment. You need to go through the low period, tackle all your demons, and get back to a high period. There is only one way to do this, and that is to work on you. It may seem a little selfish, especially if you have children, but the reality is if you are showing the children a timid, un-confident person, they may end up not respecting you, or worse, ending up un-confident themselves. You need to focus on you, to give the right message to your children, and everyone else, show that you mean business.

Take some time out

You need a sanctuary. Somewhere you can go for ten minutes or half an hour every day to get away from it all and relax and unwind. This is so important for your health, both mentally and physically. Stress can build up and, over time, can have a devastating effect. If you can just get away from it all and disappear into that private space, you will feel so much better. Perhaps you could benefit from learning how to meditate. If you are continually battling thoughts, you may need a new perspective. Time out will, first of all, give you the space to reflect upon things. You may be able to start prioritizing the things in your life. If you are overwhelmed by the amount of stuff going on, you may need to think about what you can cut out. Becoming more mindful, and trying to understand your own motivations behind behaving in specific ways will help you no end. If you can build a better way of thinking, it will help you in so many ways.

Start saying No

It is not your responsibility to fix the problems of the world. If people constantly ask you for favors, this could be work colleagues or friends and acquaintances, and you have a habit of saying yes, you have got to be strong and say no. Overloading yourself with other people’s tasks is not good. You need to prioritize yourself, your family, and your life. This is not selfish. This is common sense. If you are running around after other people all the time, who is going to be there for your children. You and they should be first. Being a people pleaser does not earn you any respect. In fact, quite the opposite is true. You are being used and taken advantage of. So start saying no, and you will feel the power of this word, as every time you say it a load is taken off your shoulders, and you become more confident as a result.

Streamline your life

If you can manage the first two tips, this one will come naturally. You need to stop doing too much. Everyone does things they don’t need to and waste time. Time is a precious commodity, and you need to focus it on the areas of your life that are the most fulfilling. If that means cutting people and ties out of your life, so be it. If you feel that way, these people do nothing to enhance your life anyway. Many people and their opinions are detrimental to yourself. Keep the people that bring you up and say goodbye, at least symbolically to the ones that don’t. In addition, think about better ways you can do household tasks, like are you one for making a lot of trips to the corner store. You should try and get everything you need in one supermarket shop. This will save you time for more important things. Having more time for you and the family, and getting rid of negativity will change your sense of self-worth, and cause you to be more relaxed.

Fix up your image

This can mean a lot of different things, but if you look better, you will feel better and have more confidence. Since you now have more time, get out, and do some exercise. Go jogging a few times a week that will help you lose those few extra pounds. Exercise is a natural mood enhancer too. It makes the body less stressed, and it floods your system with endorphins. If jogging is not for you, why not go walking. In fact, you could invest in a puppy here so you will always have a walking partner. Not only that, dogs have a way of bringing joy and happiness into anyone’s life. Think about your diet too, swap sugary foods for fruit and vegetables. Go out and purchase a new wardrobe of clothes. A little bit of retail therapy will be great. Go get a new haircut and facial. There are many ways you fix up your image. It is up to you.

Stop doubting yourself

When you realize that your thoughts have traveled down a certain negative route, have a word with yourself. Stop and think, how have I got here? Why do I think I can’t do this or that? A lot of mental issues people have is to do with an inability to analyze their own thoughts. You are a master of your own mind, and if you think negatively, you will be depressed. Swap those ‘I can’ts’ to ‘I cans’, and you will start to feel more confident. It all starts and ends with you. No one can tell you what to think. So if you want to have confidence, you need to start taking control of how you think.

Essential Tips To Keep Your Puppy Healthy

Taking care of a puppy is a joyous, enlightening, and truly rewarding experience. Within just a short time together, your new pet will become your strongest defender, favorite cuddly toy, and best companion. Just like people, animals must adopt healthy habits to live long and happy lives. Since your pet can’t do this for themselves, it’s up to you to take care of them. Dogs benefit our lives in many ways, so it’s only fair we repay the favor by ensuring theirs are the best they can be. With that in mind, here are thirteen essential tips you must know to keep your puppy healthy.

Picture – CC0 License

  1. Feed A Balanced Diet

Feeding your furry friend the right type and amount of food will help them to maintain a healthy weight. This is one of the very best ways to prevent obesity and therefore extend their lifespan. Good nutrition will also aid in digestion, increase immunity, and promote heart health. If you’re unsure which food to give your puppy, then speak to your vet. Whatever type you pick, make sure you feed the right amount for their weight. You must also wash out their bowl each day.

  1. Walk Together Every Day

While different breeds require different levels of activity, all puppies need exercise. This is especially important during growth and when your furry friend is going through adolescence. For this reason, you must make sure that you take your pet for daily walks. If harsh weather stops you from going out, then find activities to do inside instead. Gage what types of activities your puppy enjoys by trying out a few different ones and seeing how they react.

  1. Leave Out Fresh Water

Regardless of the situation, your dog must always have access to fresh water. When at home, you should leave out a bowl for them, but you must take drinks out and about with you too. While some pet parents carry a bottle of water and a collapsible bowl for ease, there are other options you could try. Dogs will try to drink any water they have access to, even when it isn’t clean. Therefore, if you’re visiting a pond or lake, for example, you must try to deter them from doing so.

  1. Teach Them New Tricks

All dogs need training, and it’s best to start this in their youngest years. This provides mental stimulation, which is crucial in keeping your dog happy, but it will also enhance the relationship you share. Having a dog that listens to your commands could save their life one day too. Continued teaching is the key to long term success, so don’t quit your training sessions when your puppy reaches a certain age. Instead, teach them new tricks, while you go over old lessons.

  1. Attend Regular Vet Checks

Every pet parent knows they should take their dog to the vet when they’re sick. However, it’s vital that you do so even when yours isn’t. Attending a pet clinic will provide your furry friend with all of the vaccinations they need to fight off common health problems. You must also schedule regular check-ups, which allow your vet to monitor your dog’s health. Without these checks, a health issue could develop and get worse for some time before it is noticed and can be treated.

  1. Invest In Pet Insurance

Although you will surely do your best to keep your puppy healthy, there is still a chance they could become sick or injured. If this were to happen, the treatments required to help your dog could be costly. Because of this, you must invest in pet insurance. Failing to do this means that you may not be able to cover treatment expenses, which would leave your furry friend suffering. This is a relatively small cost in comparison to the benefit it provides and the stress it can save you from.

  1. Pet-Proof The House

Most houses aren’t safe for a puppy before they arrive. Exposed wires could cause shocks, loose carpeting could cause falls, and open chemicals could cause poisoning. Rather than expect your furry friend to navigate these risks, you must pet-proof your home. Make sure that all toxic substances are locked away and that flooring, wires, furniture, and all else is secure. It can take some time to make your home safe for an animal, but the effort is more than worth it.

  1. Switch Up The Toys

As you work to make your home safer, you will likely add dog-friendly extras, like beds, bowls, and toys. Rather than give your pet all of their toys at once, you should lay out a small selection. This allows you to switch up their options now and then. Animals get bored just like we do, but if you keep changing which toys your pet has available to them, they will continue to find them exciting. This will also provide mental stimulation, which is essential in keeping them happy.

  1. Find Them New Friends

Dogs are pack animals by nature. They need to socialize, or they won’t ever be truly happy. Although your pet surely loves spending time with you, they need to have fun with their own kind too. For this reason, you should visit a local park to see if there are any other dogs looking for a playmate. You may also want to take your furry friend to puppy parties or doggy daycare. This gives them the opportunity to meet and interact with lots of other dogs at the same time.

  1. Get Your Pet Fixed

Unless you plan to breed your pet, it makes sense to get them fixed as soon as possible. There are many benefits to having this procedure done, including preventing certain diseases and cancers. Neutering will also reduce aggressive behavior in males, which is crucial if you have other pets or young children in the house. For females, spaying prevents them from going into heat, which will reduce the behaviors associated with doing so, like spraying and yowling.

  1. Look After Their Teeth

Stinky dog breath isn’t pleasant, especially when your pet loves to give you puppy kisses. The good news is, you don’t have to put up with it. Brushing your dog’s teeth regularly will help to prevent the nasty smell, as well as many oral diseases and other dental problems. However, you must make sure that you use the right toothpaste. Human toothpaste is toxic to dogs, but there are products for canines. Giving your pet chew toys and chewy treats will also protect their teeth.

  1. Keep Their Coat Clean

Grooming is much more important than just mere appearance. By regularly trimming, brushing, and washing your pet, you can keep an eye on changes to their skin and fur. For this reason, it’s vital for every breed of dog and type of coat. This is also an ideal time to check for any lumps and bumps. Many people hire groomers to clean their pets, but you don’t always have to. As long as you have the correct tools, there’s no reason why you can’t groom the dog yourself at home.

  1. Spend Quality Time Together

Keeping your puppy healthy requires more than exercise and nutritious food. Your furry friend must also know that you love it, which you can only show if you spend quality time together. This means taking daily walks, playing in the yard, and cuddling in front of the television. Pets are a part of the family, so make sure you treat yours as one. Even if you can’t spend all of your time together, you must make sure that the time you do have is special for both of you.

With the advice above, you can ensure that your puppy stays happy and healthy.
