Thinking about school and everything that goes along with it should not be a one-and-done proposition that happens in the fall just before the school year begins. You should pay attention to what is happening all year long to ensure everyone is prepared, supported, and set up for success, regardless of the date on the calendar. Here are some tips to help your kids stay school-ready throughout the school year.
Set them up for success with the right supplies.
All students, regardless of their age, need school supplies. Some need more than others, depending on their areas of study and interest or school supply lists. However, it is important to strive to find high-quality supplies and gear that will help set them up for success and avoid having them break down and cause problems that no kid wants. To that end, look for durable school bags that will travel well from home to school and back again. You should find bags that are suitable to hold all of their school essentials and anything extra they need to be productive students. You will get bonus points when you buy them a bag that looks great and is comfortable, too.
Set reasonable bedtimes, regardless of their age.
Kids need sleep, and that is a fact. Regardless of their age or their objections otherwise, your student should get a full night’s sleep every night. Of course, sometimes a difficult project will push up against a healthy bedtime, or a weekend event might mean everyone stays up later and sleeps in the next day. The idea is to strive for consistency in your kids’ sleep patterns and habits. Try to have them turn in for bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. This will help set their internal clock and ensure they receive enough hours of quality sleep on a consistent basis.
Make sure they have downtime.
Today’s kids are overscheduled, and that seems to be the consensus from the experts. Unfortunately, many parents have been told that their kids have to stay active and be well-rounded to keep up with their peers and remain competitive for whatever comes next, such as college, even if they are only in elementary or middle school. From travel teams to extra classes and tutoring sessions, kids are expected to do much more in the same amount of time than kids a decade or so ago. Do your best to help keep your kids well-rounded and engaged, but take actionable steps to help them balance their lives through downtime. Remember that they will never have a childhood again, and these moments are to be cherished for them and you.

Take pride in your kids’ effort in and out of school while supporting their hard work at every turn. They will know that you care and appreciate your efforts, too, especially when you give them time to be kids. Sometimes, parenting is hard, but you want to do everything to ensure your kids have the best opportunities to succeed in life. That starts with receiving love and compassion from you and a quality education in a supportive environment to help ensure success.
