A Day in the Life of a Blogger: What It Really Looks Like
Hey y’all! It’s Kathy here — and today I wanted to do something a little different. I usually focus on helping you find honest opinions and trustworthy content, but behind all that, there’s a whole lotta life happening behind the screen.
I thought it would be fun (and hopefully helpful!) to share a real, honest look at what a typical day as a blogger looks like for me. Spoiler: it’s not always cute coffee mugs, perfect lighting, and dreamy flat lays. Sometimes it’s sweatpants, reheated coffee, and trying to write with a dog pawing at my leg!
Whether you’re curious about blogging life, thinking about starting your own blog, or just wondering what the heck bloggers actually do all day, I hope you enjoy this peek into my daily routine.
☀️ Morning: Coffee, Chaos & Content Planning
I’ll be honest — I’m not one of those 5AM, green juice, yoga-at-sunrise kind of bloggers. I wake up around 7:30 AM, usually with my dog nudging me like, “Hey lady, breakfast?”
The first thing I do is make coffee (strong, with vanilla creamer, if you’re wondering) and try to get a few minutes of peace. I’ll scroll through emails, check in on site traffic, see how my most recent post is performing, and look at social media notifications — especially comments and messages from readers.
Once I’ve caffeinated and answered anything urgent, I’ll move into content planning mode. This part is all about:
-
Reviewing my editorial calendar
-
Brainstorming ideas for upcoming blog posts
-
Looking at Google Trends or Pinterest to see what’s hot
-
Updating old posts that are getting traffic but might be a little outdated
Some days I’m bursting with inspiration. Other days, I just stare at my Google Doc like… “what even is content?”
It’s not always glamorous — but it’s the creative part I love most.
💻 Mid-Morning: Writing, Editing & More Coffee
Once I settle in, it’s time to write. Blogging is way more than writing, but this part is still the heartbeat of it all. I’ll usually work on:
-
Drafting a full blog post (like this one!)
-
Editing photos or graphics
-
Adding keywords and formatting for SEO
-
Creating Pinterest pins or Instagram captions related to the post
I try to keep things quiet during this time — no phone, no email, just me and my keyboard. I even light a candle sometimes to make it feel a little more focused and cozy.
And yes, I still get distracted by laundry, dishes, or TikTok just like anyone else. But I always come back. The key is showing up, even when it’s messy.
If I finish a post before lunch, I’ll schedule it to go live, share it to social platforms, and start mapping out how I’ll promote it throughout the week. Trust me — publishing is only the beginning.
🥗 Lunchtime: Step Away from the Screen (Hopefully)
I try to give myself a real lunch break. On a good day, I’ll go outside for a walk, do a quick workout, or call a friend just to feel human again. Other days, I’m eating leftovers while checking blog comments.
One thing I’ve learned as a blogger is how important it is to recharge your brain. Creativity doesn’t come from constant hustle — it comes from stillness, inspiration, and living life.
Also, my dog usually insists on being walked, whether I feel like it or not. So that’s accountability for ya!
🛠️ Afternoon: Admin, Emails, Analytics & Planning
The afternoon is usually when I shift gears from “creative mode” to “business mode.”
Here’s a little of what that looks like:
-
Replying to brand emails or reader questions
-
Checking in on affiliate dashboards to see how things are performing
-
Looking at Google Analytics or Search Console to track blog growth
-
Updating old blog posts to improve traffic
-
Creating content outlines for future posts
Sometimes I also work on collaborations with other bloggers or schedule upcoming giveaways. It’s a lot of juggling, but it keeps things interesting!
This is also the time when I’ll batch-create graphics or schedule pins using Tailwind, or plan Instagram posts using Later.
Blogging isn’t just writing — it’s also running a business, managing a brand, and making smart decisions about what content connects with readers (that’s you!).
🌆 Evening: Wrapping Up & Wind-Down Time
By around 5:30 or 6 PM, I try to shut the laptop and switch gears. I’ll do one last check of emails and social media, but I try to respect my evenings — especially if I’ve been staring at a screen all day.
Dinner is when I finally get to relax, catch up with family, or watch something fun (I’ve been loving home renovation shows lately — anyone else?).
But let’s be real: there are plenty of nights where I’m still tweaking a blog post, replying to comments, or brainstorming future content in my Notes app at 11PM. The line between “life” and “work” gets blurry when you love what you do — and when your job is based at home.
💬 So… What’s It Really Like to Be a Blogger?
It’s a lot. And it’s not for everyone.
Some days I feel like I’m juggling 12 different jobs. Other days, I’m shocked that this is my actual life. It’s a mix of creativity, discipline, self-doubt, tiny wins, and constant learning.
But I love it. Every comment I get from someone who found a post helpful, every email from a reader who felt seen or supported — that’s what keeps me going.
