Is Your Storage Ruining Your Seasonal Decor?

Is Your Storage Ruining Your Seasonal Decor

Want to know something that just instantly wrecks a holiday season? Well, here you are just wanting to unwrap the magic that your seasonal decor has, but the problem is that sometimes, it’s just been sitting there for months on end, just getting more and more damaged by the week. No, not just Christmas decor, but general seasonal decor, be it Halloween decor, spring decor, summer throw pillows, you get the idea here. All of this stuff is basically just a small fortune in storage, right?

Think about it; ornaments from childhood, personalized stockings, big wreaths, faux garlands, table settings, themed pieces that definitely were not cheap, all of it ends up boxed and shoved somewhere. Most people think the main job is wrapping things in bubble wrap so they don’t break. Sure, that’s the basic stuff here, but there’s some other damage that you might not be noticing.

Your Storage Spaces Have their Own Climate

Hence, why a lot of storage units will usually promote “climate control” because it means that the storage unit facility won’t be a giant ice box (or an oven if it’s the summer). But it’s not just storage unit facilities either, actually, storage areas almost never feel like the rest of the house. Like, even the attics run hot and cold, basements get damp, and garages and sheds follow outdoor temperatures. But you get the idea here, it’s not like the same temperature you have for your bedroom or living room.

Those swings are rough on materials, like candles warp, plastic gets brittle, fabrics fade, and adhesives give up. Actually, even cardboard boxes soak up moisture pretty easily and can eventually mold (which obviously means a lot of your decor will be ruined). So, if you have an attic, for example, where you’re leaving your stuff, then it might be a good idea to look into an attic insulation company, and it also might help to just look around for potential moisture and mold.

Cardboard Boxes are Pest Magnets

Actually, speaking of cardboard boxes, this is a whole other problem that needs some attention, too. Now, for most people, cardboard boxes are the go-to when it comes to storage, which makes sense; they’re dirt cheap and convenient. But both rodents and insects love them. Basically, a holiday box that goes into a garage or shed clean in January can come back out in November with shredded corners, droppings, and a smell, a disgusting odor.

Just picture having textiles in that box,  like a tablecloth or Christmas stockings, only for them to now be frayed, scratched up, with holes in them, you name it. It’s just gut-wrenching to think about, right?

You Might Just Need to Upgrade the Space

So, if you’re using a storage unit, then you’ll need to find one with climate control, that’s one example here. If you’re using a garage, attic, or basement, then you might need insulation and pest control; the same can be said if you’re using a shed outside as well. But you get the idea here, you’ll probably need to make some upgrades, which, yes, costs money, in order to avoid any damaged goods. But getting some plastic containers can still help wya better than cardboard boxes could.
