Why Downsizing Your Car Can Actually Upgrade Your Life

Why Downsizing Your Car Can Actually Upgrade Your Life

Everyone acts like you need some giant SUV to be considered a responsible adult. Like, the same goes for a family vehicle: go big or go home (or stay home in this case). Sure, depending on the size of your family, you might need more seats, but it just depends on the actual size itself.

But anyways, it’s like, oh, you have a dog? Better get a massive car. Oh, you occasionally buy groceries? Massive car. Oh, you exist? Yep, massive car. But do you actually need one? Do you actually need those giant trucks that take over a road? Do you actually need all that space? Can you actually afford one? Can you actually afford to fill one up? Can you this? Can you that? Yeah, you get the idea here.

Well, chances are, you probably don’t need a big car. Actually, there’s something kind of liberating about not driving around a vehicle the size of a small apartment. A smaller car can make life feel simpler, easier, and just… less stressful overall. Oh, and probably cheaper too.

Parking Shouldn’t Feel High-Pressure

Yeah, no one likes parallel parking, or properly parking in general, but you need to. But throw in a big car, well, good luck, because everything is about to get a lot harder. But the same for a tight parking garage? Yep, just forget it. Street parking in downtown areas? That’s a sweat-fest. But yeah, overall, a smaller car means sliding into spots without spending ten minutes doing the awkward wiggle and readjustment. Besides, if you live in an urban area, what good does a giant car do for you if you’re already having to battle for a parking spot anywhere in the first place?

Less Fuel and Less Money Spent

Well, it helps that smaller cars aren’t that expensive, like a new MINI car, for example, isn’t all that pricey, and it helps that it doesn’t take much in terms of fuel (so it’s not a gas guzzler like those monster-size trucks are). But yeah, in general, smaller cars don’t take up much gas, and gas is only getting more expensive, need to keep that in mind too. So think about it, when buying a new car, if it’s smaller, it most likely won’t cost much, and the fuel itself won’t be nearly as expensive as those large vehicles.

Keep Maintenance Cost in Mind

Bigger cars often come with bigger repair costs. Bigger tires, bigger parts, bigger labor bills, more chances for mechanics to go “Okay so actually there’s one more thing…” and then the number doubles. Fantastic. No, there’s actually no exaggeration here either. Now, it’s not like maintenance is free with smaller cars, but at least when it comes to smaller cars, the maintenance tends to be a little less expensive.

You Just have More Control Behind the Wheel

Well, this one should be obvious: the bigger the car, the harder it is to control. You don’t have that when it comes to the smaller ones. Besides, think of small narrow roads, sometimes in rural areas there aren’t guard rails, so it’s a lot safer too (because there’s the chance of tipping for a large car, like a truck).
